He Started It

Don’t tell me to stop making negative remarks about our rhetorically-challenged incumbent senator. He started it.

After all this talk I hear from the Sayre campaign about keeping this race positive and based upon facts and real solutions for our valley, Hanger goes off like a Dick Cheney shotgun.

What prompted it?

Hanger again accuses Scott Sayre’s supporters of being anti-tax, anti-government “extremists”; and he bashes the Republican grassroots which got him elected; and he insinuates that the Sayre campaign will be utilizing outside funds; and he throws potshots, like “I don’t need a consultant to tell ME how to think; and… Well, you know the rest.

And then, when the Sayre campaign says anything about Hanger’s record (the FACTs) they get accused of “negative campaigning”.

Hanger’s tax increases were the largest ever and were during a time of surplus --- “Oh, but that’s negative campaigning.”

Most of Hanger’s own money is from outside the 24th District --- “Oh, but that’s negative campaigning.”

Hanger supports raising the gas tax, giving illegals loopholes to get in-state tuition, and giving certain convicted felons back their voting rights --- “Oh, but that’s negative campaigning.”

As Charlie Brown would say, “Good grief!”

All I have to say is: He started it.

I wanted to post this comment under the "Tell Me Lies" header, but could not.
So ...
The point raised about the origin of campaign contributions is a good one, but there is an error in fact there that needs to be corrected.
According to the very VPAP page that readers are referred to, there are several other contributions from outside the 24th in Sayre's account - $4,000 from North Garden, $3,750 from Harrisonburg, $2,650 from Amherst, $850 from Charlottsville, and $500 from Camden, S.C.
According to some quick math that I just did, that still gives Scott the right to say that as of this report more than 75 percent of his money has come from 24th District residents.
But to suggest that the figure is in the 92 percent range would make the headline of this piece ironic more than informative.

Also, under the "Tell Me Lies" header or anywhere on these Bloggers 4 Sayre...Who is the Virginia Conservative Alliance? I've seen them mentioned in these blogs lately. There much ado about some ads they were running about Hanger but their financial statements don't show where they paid for the ads. They spent a whole lot of money in 2004 running ads against Hanger. Looks like around $90,000. All of the money came from Walter Curt's old company. Is the Conservative Alliance more than one man and his money? Who are all these politicians pledging to when they sign the no tax pledge? And who are you bloggers really writing for?

Anonymous, why don't you come out from behind your "anonymous" facade to make your accusations?

Chris, even at "only" 75% that is a significant number as compared to what Emmett has collected from inside the District.

The campaign radio ad Hanger is playing is blatantly untrue and read in his own voice. The VPAP reports are public knowledge, and bloggers have posted about the differences; yet, Hanger continues to run the ad. Isn't that newsworthy?

Obviously there is more money in play than has been put in Sayre's account. Who else would I be voting for if I voted for Sayre? Just seems a dirty game is being played.

Anonymous, prove it.

You are a Hanger supporter who throws out accusations without proof. Go to VPAP and look up political contributions. You have no credibility especially as an anonymous poster.

Is "Anonymous" Emmett Hanger himself? LOL

"Obviously there is more money in play than has been put in Sayre's account."

Sayre actually got a real late start at fund raising, although he is making up for it every day..

Chris:
Scott has raised some $$ from outside the district, but Harrisonburg, Charlottesville and Amherst are neighbors..

but the real story is the $25k dropped on Emmett specifically from a fund put together to reward..errr.. defend those Pubs who voted for Warner's tax increase..

I mean isn't that a story in itself?

SWAC Girl re: prove it!

As I am sure you know because you encourage your readers to do it, you can look up financial records for all canidates and political action commities at vpap.org and sbe.virginia.gov. There you will see that the Virginia Conservative Alliance has only one source of income. Again I ask, If a candidate signs a pledge to this PAC to whom do they owe their allegiance? As far as I know Senator Hanger has not signed any pledges to special interest groups. According to the blogs I've read on this site Sayer has. Serving special interest doesn't get any more special than signing over voting rights and decision making responsibilities to one man's PAC. Can you prove otherwise?

Anonymous,

Has Scott Sayre signed a pledge with the VCA PAC? You might need to do some research on that.

And do some research on Mr. Hanger also. Has he signed any commitment to his constituents?

Mr. Sayre has promised his voters that he will not raise new taxes for four years, but will work to eliminate wasteful spending a run a responsible budget.

Those "Special Interest Groups" to which you are refering are the very groups who will hold Sayre to it.

Hanger has no such accountability... does he?
