Virginia's Revolt, Not a Revolution - Yet

In Feudal Europe the peasants would rise up, occasionally, against particularly oppressive lords. After a bit of looting, killing and drunken revelry the 'Jacquerie' would be suppressed by all the neighboring lords with a fair measure of atrocities to send the proper message. Keep your place, Peasants. Your pitchforks are no match for our armed, heavy horsemen.

In our fertile, but as yet, futile Virginia the peasants are rising here and there. It's not clear if their efforts will be as ephemeral as a Jacquerie or more like the 1775 rising for the Rights of Englishmen in America.

The difference between the losing and the winning among Hanger, Stosch, Bell and Williams is very local and idiosyncratic.

I was intimately involved in the Stall win (Full Disclosure) - 1st Senate District - my home district. I was in contact with fellow peasants in other races.

Working the polls in Poquoson (our town went 59:41 for Stall with 12% voting in a party primary), I heard five people say variations of this:

The politicians, both Republican and Democrat, think we are stupid. We aren't. We will show them here at the polls.

Other comments were about how many times we have to vote 'No' for an elected official to get the message - and not cram unelected, unaccountable Regional Government down our throats.

What is wrong when a politician will spend over a half million dollars to keep his job? Who is getting paid off? Etc.

Since Tuesday afternoon, I've heard the same sentiments from voters in Newport News, York, and Hampton. The Democrats on the Hampton City Council may have gotten the message. Last night they voted unanimously against the Transportation Tax Panic - Regional Government.

There is a palatable sense of betrayal held by many common folk for elected officials, former elected officials and party officials who support incumbents who betray campaign promises and party creeds to raise taxes and expand government. There is genuine disgust with reflexive Republicans - those Republicans who would support - name your villain - no matter what they do in office as long as they were once elected as Republicans.

The resentment caused by poor management of the Iraq War and, way more, with the Illegal Alien Shamnesty Bill is great and growing.

Lest I give the wrong connotation - this isn't a vote of angry people whose ire will blow over after a relaxing summer.

It is a thoughtful vote of people who are grateful for a choice in a candidate who reflects their opinions. It is a fatigue with big government, tax and spend, tin ear politicians who won't enforce the laws on the books - the Rule of Law - let alone their campaign promises. It is an energy from people who are Patriots in every sense of the word - so many have military experience or serving family members now. It is a growing determination to do what is necessary - walk away from a major political party that once held their hopes and aspirations or any candidate - who won't do what is fundamentally necessary to protect and preserve the Constitution of the United States and the Commonwealth of Virginia - in absolute service to The People - not the special interests, the money donors, the circular flow of privilege and wealth that is Virginia's way to do political corruption.

Pundits can dismiss this little primary as they like. They didn't look the voters in the eyes. They didn't hear their voices. They didn't feel the grip of their handshake and hugs.

We beat a 12 year incumbent who outspent Tricia Stall over 10:1. Isn't money supposed to define who wins or loses? Besides, this is Tidewater where politicians are elected for life - from either party.

I don't think this is just a Jacquerie in Virginia. If Illegal Alien Shamnesty passes in Washington - we may sense, emotionally, of what it was like after the Boston Massacre and the Tea Party and the wooden bridge at Concord all built upon one another - to where the government has broken its trust with The People. The difference is all of the political fighting will be with ballots, not bayonets.

And, perhaps, as we did on The Peninsula - The People will speak clearly.

Battle in the 24th: The Delegate Factor

It's time to discuss Delegates Landes, Saxman, Cline and the race in the 24th. Personally I like the way all three vote. Conservative on all fronts, and especially taxes. As Scott Sayre pointed in the recent debate with Hanger, all three have signed the VCAP 'No New Taxes Pledge", and have voted against Hanger's 04' tax increase, and his subsequent tax packages in 05' and 06'. The only person 'out of step' around our district is Hanger period, on taxes.

Del. Landes finally declared for Hanger last week, by himself.. No Saxman or Cline in attendance. What does this tell you? He owed his allegiance to Hanger for past favors, and they share family in staffing, so no surprise there. I will say this for Del. Landes, 'At least he took a stand'. His late endorsement really speaks more for Sayre than it does for Hanger, so he isn't seen as disfavorably with the local grass roots, although we obviously wished he would have stayed neutral altogether, or endorsed as he really votes in the General Assembly.

On to Del. Saxman. He and Emmett have always had conflicting interests. Both have state wide ambitions, as Emmett had a failed LG run in 05', and Saxman is always the talk of a McDonnell-Saxman-Connaughton ticket in 09'. Saxman has consistently voted and advocated for lower taxes along with reigning in the 'run away spending' in our Commonwealth's budget. This sits real well with us 'extremist' grass roots types, because that means he is 'one of us'. What isn't sitting well is that he is not coming out in support of Scott Sayre, because he would be a 'huge' factor, and probably would drive the last nails in Emmett's coffin, in this race.

Now, Saxman is obviously playing it the same way VA General Assembly Speaker Howell, and House Majority Leader Griffith see this race. They came out in support of Hanger, which is a win-win for them, as they probably see this. Both of them would probably Love to see Sayre win, because they have been fighting Potts/Chichester/Hanger since 04' to try and keep a lid on taxes and spending. Should Hanger prevail in this contest, they at least are in Hanger's and the 'Senate Leadership's 'Good Graces' for publicly supporting them.

These two do not have to face any of the 24th's voters, or backlash for standing with Hanger, since we can not vote them out of office. Saxman on the other hand doesn't have this luxury. Saxman will be seen as not standing by his principles (as per his voting record) by not endorsing Sayre. The big factor here is Saxman not completely alienating either the Hanger or Sayre voters, and he can still raise $$ from both camps and smile a lot while hoping for their votes in his base district, as he readies his state wide ambitions.

Saxman still doesn't look good with his grass roots supporters who have pounded his signs, worked the polls for him, etc. since he was first elected. WE have put it all on the line, plus Leadership was expected... and I'll leave it at that.

Del. Cline, has the unenviable position of having the least seniority of the three, and can receive the most damage from the Speaker and House Majority Leader for appearing to 'buck' both of them, with an endorsement of Sayre. Philosophically, Cline is completely in line with Sayre on taxes and spending. His 'Yellow Pages' Bill meets the same fate as Saxman's 'School Choice' in Senate Finance... Doesn't see the light of day, because well, you see the 'Senate Leadership' could obviously not give a 'rip' about spending and taxes, because well, they are all about raising taxes and spending.

Ben also has the problem of a one David Beyeler, who is Augusta County Supervisor and Hanger supporter who holds some sway in Ben's Augusta County precincts. Think that conversation has come up between the two? Never mind that David Beyeler is also philosophically in line with Sayre also on Spending and taxes, but hey, He has been buddies with Hanger forever. Can you say 'Good ol' Boy' network? My favorite conversation with Beyeler is reminding him that by endorsing Hanger, he also endorses a 5% wholesale gasoline tax, increasing the tax on new and used vehicles by 25%, tripling the Grantors tax, etc. etc. How about giving in-state tuition to illegal immigrants, and remember the Big Un' in 04'? The voters do.

Mr. Beyeler also is part of the same Board of Supervisors that gave our County a big fat, 28% increase in our Real Estate Assessments, and didn't see fit to drop the rate one, red, cent. I have enjoyed going door-to-door in his district for the past two weeks.... Think that subject comes up? Can you say 'Power of the Grass Roots'? Many a Sayre sign has gotten planted in the South River district, just on the basis of Beyeler's endorsement of Hanger.

Hey, isn't it Hanger that says "I'm raising taxes in Richmond, so the localities don't have to raise your local Real Estate Taxes?

In conclusion, all politics is local isn't it? The people are interested in Leadership... and the only Leadership alternative is Scott Sayre for Senate.... This whole thing plays out next Tuesday, and I for one am hoping for new Leadership, but what will the voters say? Five days to go.

(I wrote this on June 8th, 2007, and didn't publish it for fear we might lose what little support we had from our Delegates at that point. The reason I am publishing it now is because I think it is very relevent to the outcome and analysis of this campaign.)

ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION & TUITION

As a point of information. You can spin it as you wish. I suppose that we could argue all day about what Sen.Hanger's immigration bill does or does not do. We might never come to a conclusuion. Maybe we should look at what the illegal immigrants think. I can't take credit for finding this. It was posted in a comment section . Read here for yourself the whole article by Deepak Bhargava of New America Media said in a commentary about "Undocumented Students." He specifically cites Sen.Hanger and his bill.

"The bill was introduced by Emmett W. Hanger, a Republican and longtime opponent of college education for undocumented students. After presiding over naturalization ceremonies and seeing these new citizens swear their loyalty after years of effort and toil, Mr. Hanger had a change of heart. "

I guess the "Undocumented students" know what it means to them?

What a fantastic weekend!

We are in the home stretch of this campaign and Scott Sayre is doing a terrific job! We spent Friday night at Bruce and Ruth Grover's home, munching on goodies and listening to the music of Bob Campbell.

Saturday went off like gangbusters with 6 teams in the field in SWAC knocking on doors and cultivating votes. Has anyone noticed all of the Sayre signs popping up like flowers? It is a beautiful site!

These are the final days. Once again, I know that I chose the right candidate to work for. I am proud of Scott Sayre and his campaign. The race never should have gotten this close, but it was through the hard work and dedication of Scott Sayre and his grassroots that it did.

It is time for change and Scott Sayre is the right man for the job!

Who is negative?
Negative is defined as hostile or disparaging; malicious. The Bloggers4Sayre were not. We presented the facts. We did spotlight where the two candidates disagreed. We let people know about the tax increase. We let people know about illegal aliens. We let people know about the gas tax. I let people know about how Sen.Hanger has a thing for our septic systems. We let the people know which candidate was blurring the definition of a Republican.
There was a lot of sarcasm. There was a lot of humor. There were no hostile or malicious comments. The name calling and threats did not come from the Sayre supporters. The name calling didn't just come from the Senator's supporters either. The only time any of the Sayre people seem anyway negative is in defense, in responding to belligerant behavior.

Hanger at odds with RPV, threatens local committees

Ed Gillespie believes in lower taxes. Obviously he does, he's a Republican. So when Gillespie sent out a letter May encouraging ALL Republican candidates to sign the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, it came as no surprise.

In the 24th District, one candidate heeded his call (Scott Sayre), the other dismissed it and called low-tax proponents as extremists (Emmett Hanger).

Then, to further cloud the waters, Hanger said this in today's News Virginian:

"Hanger said he also has grassroots support, and said the current Republican leadership in District 24 is “out of step with the grass roots Republican agenda.”

Not to sound naive, but isn't Ed Gillespie in the head honcho in charge of grassroots? Who is out of step with the Republican grassroots?

Emmett steps in it further. Dave Fritz, editor of the Staunton News Leader, interviewed Hanger recently. Following the interview he mused:

"He (Hanger) also takes a hard look at how the local GOP got itself into this mess, mostly by breathing a sigh of relief when someone -- anyone -- would step up for the thankless jobs of local party leadership without considering the extreme agendas those volunteers brought along with them. I guess that's how a party gets hijacked by a loud minority."

Dr. Kurt Michael, chair of Augusta, faced a challenger for his chairmanship back in 2004. He brought out over 100 people at that mass meeting. Does this sound like a "sigh of relief"? Not really, that sounds to me like an awful lot of people who value Michael's leadership and want to ensure that the committee would not be led astray by special interest politicians who want to control the grassroots.

Then Emmett goes on to say:

"In an editorial board endorsement interview this week, Sen. Emmett Hanger... made it clear that if voters now and in November put him back in office, that in addition to his legislative priorities, he'll be interested in helping the traditional base of the area's GOP regain control of local party leadership positions."

So he is now threatening the local party leadership? Does he plan on replacing Dr. Kurt Michael (Augusta), Chris Darden (Waynesboro), Anne Taetzsch (Staunton), Mike Meredith (Harrisonburg), Keith Drake (Albemarle), David Kiser (Highland) and Gary Lowe (Greene)? Will he then also replace the committee members that endorsed Sayre? That means he'll have to oust the entirety of the Greene County and Waynesboro City Committees.

It speaks volumes when a candidate lashes out like this. He has no message and therefore resorts to baseless lies and threats. Those lambs who follow him had better watch out--looks like the good Senator is leading them to slaughter.

In spite of what one blogger said about my letters to the editor ,in spite of being called a paid flunky,in spite of having "just moving to the valley"(2 years ago), I did have another letter published today in the local paper.

We need Sayre
Scott Sayre is the new voice we need in Richmond. He will say no to wasteful pork spending. He has common-sense solutions to meet the Valley’s needs. He has pledged to stop tax increases. He has said that he would not vote for in-state tuition for illegal aliens unlike Sen. Hanger. He has been a total gentleman on the campaign trail. So have his volunteers, unlike his opponent’s paid workers.
Scott Sayre has the backing of almost all of the grassroots volunteers in Augusta, Greene, Albemarle, Highland, Rockbridge and Rockingham counties. He has the support of the grassroots in Staunton and Waynesboro. Scott Sayre has asked for our votes on June 12. Let’s give it to him, so he can stop the wild tax increases that we are experiencing here in the Valley.

B4S accused of Hate Speech

I guess the three blind mice are running the News Leader now a days. Rather than 'discover' what would be a major story of a three term incumbent sending out mailers 'contradicting' his own legislation the MisLeader trots out a cartoon by Jim McCloskey to try and change the subject?

To top it off the bloggers symbolized behind a wooden candidate (we even operate his hand) are ostensibly spewing Hate Speech, Insults, Mocking, Negative campaigning, etc. Hate Speech, seriously? Maybe it was this post, or possibly this one?

What's really ironic about this is the fact that the 'one blog wrecked into the sewer' just finished viciously attacking family and even employees of Scott Sayre. Guess that doesn't warrant a cartoon because it would expose where the real dirt is coming from.

Regardless, going door-to-door this past week has been a very revealing experience. When you are walking past homes, you look for the address of voters so you can speak to them face to face and tell them about Scott. The other homes we 'Lit Drop' or leave a pamphlet in the newspaper box, but more often we are leaving them under doormats or curled up between the door knob and jam, if they don't have a mat.

The point though is that many of the voters we visit only have a mail box and no newspaper box, and that is prevalent for homes not on our list as voters as well. The impending death of the print MSM is pretty well documented, because most people don't have the time to read anymore, or are just so turned off by what's in the news they don't bother. Many instead just get their news from TV.

Editorially, the MisLeader is predictable with a few exceptions, but consistently they praise our Democrat Governors for attempting to raise our taxes, and demean our Conservative Legislators. What is ridiculous about the situation is that this is a solid Conservative district, and if our newspaper had a lick of business sense it would quit alienating it's potential customers and give us news and editorial comment in step with the community.

It's almost like a Darwinian 'Natural Selection of the Species' experiment, whereby an animal does stupid things, or is unwilling to adapt itself to it's environment to survive.

24th District "In Case of Emergency" Candidate

I was reading with curiosity Chris Graham's interview with David Cox, an Episcopal minister from Lexington, on the New Dominion today. Chris asked some great questions, and with so many subtexts, I am not sure where to begin. However, Cox may have revealed much more than he intended to.

The first inclination of where the Democrats are at came with this statement by Cox (potential Democrat nominee for the 24th Senate district--more on that in a bit). Cox said, "What makes this race attractive in the 24th Senatorial District is the fact that we may have a clean slate - it may be an open seat."

On first blush this seems innocuous enough; the Dems have appropriately found someone to run for their ticket. However, Cox voiced speculation that Emmett Hanger may lose--now this in and of itself is phenomenal. In the history of VA politics (correct me if I'm wrong), there have only been three incumbents unseated since Reconstruction in the General Assembly. Basically folks, it never happens. Hanger v Sayre is, as SWAC Girl alluded to, David v. Goliath. Yet, the Dems went ahead and nominated someone because even they realize that the unprecedented may happen.

However, what Cox says next interests me even more. Graham asks the follow-up question regarding what happens based on the outcome of the Republican primary. Cox's response is only thinly veiled when he says, "It’s up to the Republicans to determine what they do - and Democrats are going to respond appropriately."

The Democrats will respond appropriately? What exactly does that mean? Have they nominated Cox as the "in case of emergency candidate"? Meaning, if their native son Hanger loses, they then have a decent alternative?

There should be no "appropriate response". The bottom line, the Democrat candidate should be spending every moment of every day ensuring that he fully intends to be a contender in this race.

This is getting curiouser and curiouser. Get out the popcorn and soda, June 12th is proving to be quite a show!

In an earlier post, I asked two simple questions of the new pro-Hanger blogger, "Teddy Roosevelt":

Do you really believe funding "core services" required a 22 percent increase in the last two years? Do you believe it required a 60 percent increase over the last six?

In a later comment, Teddy referred to "a special tax message just for you on Teddy's Truth." Curious to see what I figured would be an answer to my questions, I took a look. There was some, um, interesting blog art, and rather long verbal caricature of Grover Norquist, but my questions were not even addressed, let alone answered.

Pity.

Powerful couple of weeks and much to write about but sometimes hard to keep on track when things get rolling as fast as they have. I was pleased to see the “Debate” at Blue Ridge between Sayre and Hanger and I had told both candidates from the beginning that a public forum like that was needed for the citizens of the 24th to make an informed decision. The format worked well and I believe the questions were in order and brought out many interesting responses from both Hanger and Sayre. I only wish the candidate from the Libertarian Party Mr. Sime was included for I have spoken with him several times and he has very good points and opinions that would have enhanced the “Debate”. Unfortunately the Libertarian Party is not as recognized or understood as well as it should be. I cant tell you how many times I have gotten a blank stare when I mention the “Libertarian” party in a conversation for people just are not aware of the party. And some I have even had to explain that they are not the party of “Librarians”…

I also told both Candidates that competition was a good thing even within the same party for it makes the party as a whole stronger in the end. Unfortunately on the “Outside” it has gotten ugly in places but the principles and beliefs of the Republican party are strong in the citizens of the Valley.

The week following the debate I attended the “Americans for Prosperity” luncheon in Richmond and heard several strong speakers on what has made this strong economy we have. I was very impressed by the former Lt. Governor of Maryland Michael Steele and there is no doubt this is a man that we need more of in our party and government. All of these speakers spoke of the booming economy along with the problem of overspending which has overshadowed the perception of America in many eyes of the citizens. There is no doubt we have a very strong economy as evident in the stock market, increased incomes, incredible tax revenues coming into the treasuries, and retirement accounts. The problem is we have severe spending problems at all levels of government and into our private finance dealings. These are problems that we must address sooner then later and this has been discussed in many forums recently.

It was a key point in the Sayre \ Hanger debate and continues to be an active topic in many blogs and news reports. I am encouraged by those who understand that our strong economy is the result of hard work by the working citizens of America and also the ability of businesses to respond and operate to the best of their ability. I am encouraged to see those who understand that by lowering the taxes on ALL Americans and businesses this results in increased investments and outstanding economies. John F. Kennedy understood this. So did Ronald Reagen. So did George W. Bush. And I believe Scott Sayre understands this also.

Numerous times during the debate I saw examples of how Scott Sayre understands the power of the American worker and a business that is allowed to respond in effective ways and policies. I believe that he understands the problems of wasteful and overspending in our government and the looming “Thunderstorms” in the future facing us in Social Security, Medicare, and the numerous budget problems facing us in our State budget as well.

Many times during the debate, as well as in the national debates, the topic of raising taxes to “cure our ill’s” comes up and it is interesting to see this discussed. Some people feel that with a strong economy it is appropriate to raise taxes to pay for programs and correct the results of wasteful overspending. Some people feel that this is the appropriate way to cure a problem instead of dealing with and preventing the root cause and at the same time ignoring the effects increased taxes have on an economy.

I am encouraged by those who understand and believe in the power of the American worker who is allowed to keep more of his earned income to spend, save, and invest as he sees fit. This results in personal ownership and increased efforts to provide the best possible for themselves, their families, their communities, and their country.

I am encouraged when I see Scott Sayre speak of supporting these working Americans and at the same time limiting government and it’s wasteful spending habits.

Remember. There are many forms of “The Hunt for Red November”…

Teddy on Taxes

I'll say this for Teddy's Truth (I prefer Teddy's Truthiness, but it's not my blog) - amidst the sludge aimed at us (BTW, Teddy, I'm a real person from Fredericksburg, not a "nameplate"), he does at least try to defend Emmett Hanger's tax hike votes. Scroll down a little from the blogart in Teddy's post and you get this explanation:

Hanger believes that a big part of being a Republican comes from understanding the importance of balancing the budget and in doing what is necessary to assure that core services are provided for.

Of course, this argument is hardly new; Andrew Clem tried a similar line earlier, and link Andy, Teddy sounds reasonable in the abstract. The trouble comes when actual recent budgetary history comes into play.

The fact is, when Governor Gilmore left office in January 2002, the biennial budget stood at $47 billion. The current biennial budget stands at $75 billion (Free Lance-Star), an increase of sixty percent over six years (three budget periods). The smallest budget increase, which came in Mark Warner's initial and "painful" budget, was still just shy of 10%.

In fact, the current budget is nearly $14 billion higher than the last one, a staggering increase of 22 percent.

So my question, to both Teddy and Andy (note to Andy: this is in response to your comment on my earlier post - a comment I must confess I did not notice until today) is this: Do you really believe funding "core services" required a 22 percent increase in the last two years? Do you believe it required a 60 percent increase over the last six?

If so, I simply can't take your claims to support limited government seriously.

Likewise, I can't take Emmett Hanger's claim seriously either.

It's time to call BS! Here is the reborn Bloggers 4 Hanger saying that we are liars, which is a common theme from these people. Now let's take a look at what supposedly is the truth, Emmett's latest mailer on in-state tuition to illegal aliens. WE all know he wrote the bill, yet he sends out this piece.

It is getting pretty obvious here that we are just dealing with people who have a serious inability to be honest. It just so happens that the actual President Theodore Roosevelt had something to say about these people:

"We cannot afford to differ on the question of honesty if we expect our republic permanently to endure.Honesty is not so much a credit as an absolute prerequisiteto efficient service to the public. Hanger acknowledges he seeks support of Dems

In today's Roanoke Times, reporter Michael Sluss writes the following:

"Hanger, 58, said he is reaching out to independents and Democrats who have supported him in general elections. A small turnout in the open primary could hurt his re-election chances, Hanger acknowledged."

Hanger then goes on the record stating:

"There would be the probability that I could be defeated by people who are just upset with things in general," he said.

Hanger than acknowledges that he did introduce legislation to provide in-state tuition for illegal aliens.

"Sayre also has criticized Hanger for sponsoring legislation that would allow state colleges to grant in-state tuition rates to certain illegal immigrants. Hanger's bill, which has twice failed in the House of Delegates, would prohibit colleges from offering in-state tuition to illegal immigrants, but allow exceptions for students who have lived in the state for three years, come from tax-paying families, graduated from a Virginia high school and demonstrated intent to file for U.S. citizenship.
Hanger said his bill would set a policy for state colleges and allow some narrow, "common-sense" exceptions for certain students."

This after he just paid thousands of dollars to send out a slick mailer stating the opposite and misleading voters.

I am amazed that Hanger would acknowledge that he's lost touch with the Republican party and is actively seeking votes from those outside his own party. I suppose desperate times do call for desperate measures.

Jerry Fuhrman (From on High) paid a visit to the 24th (something that, I must confess, I've been unable to do), and gives his take on the race. Here's the meat of the post (emphasis in original):

The reason Hanger has become a target for conservatives is because, over the years, he has adopted the political viewpoints of the despised enemy, liberal Democrats, having voted for tax increases to fix an overstated "education crisis" in 2004 and a mythical "transportation crisis" in 2006.
His penchant for looking the other way at the rising problem with illegal immigration (he even proposed that we offer conditional breaks on in-state college tuition to illegals) has turned much of his constituency off as well.
So Hanger is in the fight of his life. And has resorted to appealing to Democrats to save him in the
upcoming primary, where they are allowed to cross over and vote a Republican ballot.* That speaks volumes.
Those hundreds of yard signs speak to us as well. Even with liberal Democrat support, expect Hanger to be sent packing next week.
And good riddance. If we wanted a Democrat, we'd vote for a Democrat.

Emmett Desperate on In-State Tuition Issue

SB1204 is a Bill that Senator Emmett Hanger wrote, now he is running away from it like the plague. Elle has done an excellent job exposing this bill, and for all of Emmett's supporters lets do this one more time:

Seeing as how Hanger has nothing to say on his website, I had to go back and check his legislative record. As I've previously post, Hanger sponsored SB 1204, which allowed for in-state tuition for illegal aliens.

D. Notwithstanding the provisions of subsection A, any person shall be eligible for in-state tuition who:

1. Has resided with his parent, guardian, or other person standing in loco parentis while attending a public or private high school in this state;

2. Has graduated from a public or private high school in Virginia;

3. Has resided in the Commonwealth for at least three years as of the date the individual graduated from high school;

4. Has registered as an entering student in an institution of higher education;

5. Has provided an affidavit to the institution stating that he has filed an application to become a permanent resident of the United States and is actively pursuing such permanent residency or will do so as soon as he is eligible; and

6. Has submitted evidence that he, or in the case of a dependent student, at least one parent, guardian, or person standing in loco parentis, has filed, unless exempted by state law, Virginia income tax returns for at least three years prior to the date of enrollment.

This bill, as previously noted, was shot down in the house.

Then this gets sent out to the constituents of the 24th District by the Hanger Campaign. What is the term for this?

Del. Landes finally backs Hanger

No surprise here, Del Landes, as described in this NewsVirginian article:

"Landes worked for Hanger as a legislative aide when Hanger was a delegate in 1986, and considers him a mentor much like former Del. Pete Giesen and 6th District Congressman Bob Goodlatte."

His endorsement as reported:

“It’s no secret I’m supporting him,’’ Landes said of Hanger on Thursday. “I want to do something more formal.”

What is most relevent is a couple of facts.

Why didn't he come out when Hanger first announced as he rounded up every elected official he could lay his hands on, which included Democrats like Tracy Pyles of the Augusta County Board of Supervisors? This is a prime indicator of hoping he could remain neutral for the primary.

Where is the joint appearance with Del. Saxman and Del. Cline?

What does surprise me about picking today to go public is the timeliness of the endorsement so close to Hanger's path to the 'Low Road'. He failed to publically disavow himself from the new 'Mike Stark' of this campaign yesterday, by not distancing himself or his campaign from the personal attacks being leveled against his rivals spouse. Sadly, is it to be assumed that Del. Landes feels it's OK for any rival for his Seat to attack his wife and immediate family? Looks like he has left himself open for it.

I have spoken with other 'public officials' today on the phone, who suggested Hanger knew nothing about this, but took measures to pull the plug on the 'anonymous' Bloggers4Hanger blog. The question begged to be answered is that if Hanger was fully aware of this situation yesterday during the joint radio appearance, why did he fail to condemn this vicious attack on a non-candidate?

Well, the Hanger people apparently learned all the wrong lessons from last year.Their latest attempt to drag Hanger across the finish line now apparently includes digging up info on Scott Sayre's wife, and using a blogger (namely, Myron Rhodes) to get the information out. Today there was a joint appearance of Emmett Hanger and Scott Sayre on WSVA radio. The blogosphere is aware of an effort to attack candidates family members. A question was fielded by both candidates today relating to DWI laws, and both candidates answered the question.

Unfortunately, a statement was not made at that time to say that personal attacks on family members should not be a part of this campaign. That statement alone would have, or could have ended this relentless 'character assassination' of family members during a campaign. It has already been stated the two have each others phone numbers. Excerpt:

I received a call from Senator Hanger today asking me to contact the individuals who operated bloggers4hanger in order that they remove their blog. I did contact them and they did remove the blog.

I know that Emmett Hanger and George Allen are friends and have campaigned together in the past. I wonder what Allen's advice would be?

Desperate is as Desperate Does

Emmett Hanger was handily beaten by Scott Sayre in last nights debate. Scott came prepared with a grasp of the issues, and the willingness to take on a 3 term incumbent. Scott's most successful (IMHO) strategy was to isolate Emmett from our own very popular Delegates, Landes, Saxman, & Cline.

When Emmett got his chance to bash the "No New Taxes Pledge", Scott hammered him right back with reminding the audience that our Delegates also signed that pledge. The only one Sayre forgot to mention was Rep. Goodelatte, who has it hanging up on his wall in his Staunton office.

On the 04' tax increase, Sayre again reminded the audience, that all of our delegates voted against that bill. Even further damaging was SB30, the $2.6M tax increase bill that Emmett also supported, but ultimately couldn't find the votes, so only the $1.4M tax increase package prevailed.

Illegal Immigration, same outcome. Emmett just could not run and hide from the fact that he authored a bill (SB1204) to give illegal immigrants in-state tuition. The House Bill sponsored by Del. Reid simply stated "No" in-state tuition if you are an illegal alien. Sayre again successfully aligned himself with the local and very popular Delegates.

The Hanger Campaign seeing their polling numbers steadily heading south, and with the realization that 7 out of 8 24th District unit chairman back Sayre have now sent out a three page glossy flyer including an absentee ballot with this message in RED:

"REMEMBER: The Republican Primary is open to ALL registered voters of the 24th Senate District"

I have not embellished the capitalization or emphasis at all....

But it doesn't stop there. Now the Hanger camp is attacking members of Scott's family.. via the blogs.... Soundly beaten on the issues, they attack a candidate that has run a clean campaign. This is a guy who won't let me put up a "Least Wanted Poster" in campaign HQ....

You know people asked can the 'rift' in the local GOP be repaired regardless of the outcome of the June 12th Primary. This kind of 'dirty pool' sure isn't going to help now is it?

The Dems fall right into the trap

Now it's time for some actual analysis on what the Democrats' nomination of David Cox means.

I should note that I observed a primary somewhat similar to this two years ago when Shaun Kenney tried to knock off Delegate Robert Orrock. The local Democrats had someone waiting in the wings, but largely kept the would-be nominee there. In the end, the Dems never put a candidate forward; I'm guessing it's because they didn't think Orrock would go down (he won by about eight points in the primary).

In this case, however, the Democrats have decided to go "above ground," and not only put forth their nominee (Cox), but had him rip Scott Sayre up one side and down the other. It was left to former Senator Frank Nolen to go after Hanger. From this, I can draw a couple of conclusions (admittedly from afar).

The Democrats think Sayre will win: They wouldn't have bothered with a nominee, let alone finding someone to push aside the would-be tax-cutter Will Hrovat, if they thought Hanger would pull this out. Cox will have little, if any, appeal to Sayre voters if Hanger wins. Moreover, a Democrat running against Hanger would put some local Dems in a pickle. Clearly, this is a scenario they don't see coming.

More to the point, the Dems want Sayre to win: The strategy the Democrats are employing is right out of their Republican-primary-reaction playbook - run a candidate who will supposedly appeal to those who voted for the moderate primary loser. Of course, Cox will run no matter what happens, but no Democrat outside the 24th will care as much if Hanger is renominated. Conventional wisdom holds that Hanger is tougher to beat than Sayre is (said conventional wisdom is wrong, but I'll get to that later).

Local Democrats know this as much as anyone else, which bring us to the most important point, Hanger cannot rely on a single Democrat to support him in a primary: The partisan Dems won't be looking at the primary choice as the lesser of two evils (as many did in the aforementioned Kenney-Orrock race), they'll be looking at the best chance to take the seat. That will mean sitting the primary out, or for the more Machiavellian types, actually voting for Sayre in the primary (note: in the land of my birth and upbringing - New Jersey - cross-party primary sabotage was routine).

So will the Democrats win the seat if Sayre knocks off Hanger?

No.

As I've mentioned before, the presence of Liberatarian Arin Sime throws a monkey wrench into the Democrats' plan, for reasons I mentioned earlier:

Sime will have to oppose Sayre from the left, in which case he and the Democrat will be fishing in the same pond. So in a general election, Sime and the Democrat will battle for the liberal minority while Sayre has the conservative majority all to himself, and as such, he (Sayre) will cruise to victory.

This is why I have always considered Sayre the stronger general election candidate than Hanger. As I expected, most Democrats disagree, including the Democrats in the 24th. So thanks to their mistake, Scott Sayre is not only better positioned in the general election, but the primary election as well.

The Sayre campaign couldn't have had it better if they had planned it all.

Who's the frontrunner?

Amidst the Hanger-Sayre primary debate last night and the Democrats' nomination of David Cox to face the winner of said primary, this little nugget from The New Dominion's Chris Graham (emphasis added):

Cox, who ran unsuccessfully for the 24th House District seat that represents a chunk of the 24th Senate District against Republican Ben Cline in 2005, came out of the shadows as a candidate viewed by local Dems as the candidate who can knock off the person presumed to be the frontrunner for the GOP nomination in the June 12 Senate primary on the Republican side, Buena Vista businessman Scott Sayre.

What? Scott Sayre is the frontrunner? I thought Emmett Hanger was going to cruise against us "extremist" yahoos.

Debate BRCC 2007...

There was a good turnout tonight at the Question\Answer forum between State Senator Hanger and Candidate Sayre at the Blue Ridge Community College...

The format worked well and I am sure there will be much written about the "Debate" in the next few days by the local bloggers, Bob Stuart from the NewsVirginian, and David Royer in the NewsLeader...

Rightside will be sure to write about it the way I saw it and I was glad to see this type of format provided to the voters of the 24th district...

Many Issues and topics will be discussed in the next few days. One thing that stood out to me tonight was the perceived future of the Virginia economy by the two Candidates. It has been reported recently that the Virginia budget may see a shortfall in the future due to slowing housing sales and other economic reasons. It was interesting to see how each Candidate responded to this question and how they saw the future with how they would\will address a potential "Shortfall"...

Some People see this glass as "Half-empty" as compared to other people who see this glass "Half-full"...

I believe in the man who considers this glass "Half-full" and sees the potential and the strength of the American worker and business's to respond to the challenge as we did after the attacks of September 11th.

Emmett's Popularity

Hmmm..Something here does not make sense. Pollsters presented this option to Emmett because he is so popular? Come on Emmett! Do thou speak with forked tongue? So your pollsters and workers presented you with the option of running as a independent because of your overwhelming popularity?

You get the feeling that poll wasn't confined to the 'universe' of identified Republican voters only. Maybe it's:

Popularity with Democrats... He votes with Gov. Mark Warner in 04' for the largest tax increase in the history of Virginia.

BTW, Republitarian sure seems to agree with this tax increase, looky here at question #14, he really is out of the closet, concerning his support for Hanger, which also apparently is a water closet.

Popularity with Democrats... He votes with Gov. Kaine on tax increases. This makes a lot of sense why he would think of running as an independent... Makes you wonder with which party would he caucus if he did win such a run?

Popularity with Democrats... He refers to his fellow Republicans as 'extremists'. Now who uses that type of language?

Al Gore has made his sharpest attack yet on the George Bush presidency, describing the current US administration as "a renegade band of rightwing extremists".

Sayre's Military Experience

Scott Sayre's military prowess is great and very evident. The people of Heidelberg, Germany are sure to be indebted to his presence in their city.

In Heidelberg, First Lieutenant Scott Sayre had under his command 272 soldiers. Serving as security platoon leader in his combat support company, he also found himself taking on the positions of a unit field officer and voting officer.

In the peaceful moments at base, when the eminent threat of a terrorist attack was not looming on the horizon, it was Sayre's job to see that all the soldier's pay was dispersed correctly. This was a major boost to the soldier's morale and welfare in the unit. Sayre also orchestrated brining American Christmas's to Germany for the troops--organizing Christmas Parties for his men. In an effort to bring in more capital to his unit, he installed video games in the NCO Lounge in Patton Barracks...converting it to a leisure room with couches. The money that was spent on these games generated much income and that money went directly back into the company's fund.

But all was not peaceful...terrorists were out there to be sure. And Scott Sayre's band of men at Heidelberg defended their post, base, and city with frightening voraciousness. And perhaps that is why that under 1LT. Sayre's command, THERE WERE NO TERRORIST ACTIVITIES SUCCESSFULLY CARRIED OUT. That is because Sayre is a military man. He knew now and then the value of true leadership and what a true military tactician should be. His men served as the elite guards of the US-European War Room in Campbell Barracks. Here were some of the allies most confidential, sensitive, and encrypted correspondences and orders. At any time, one could find the room buzzing with officers from many different branches and usually 4 and 3 star generals. For these men, in addition to guarding the room itself, Sayre and his men served as these general's personal bodyguards.

In 1981, at the height of terrorism in this area, Sayre's men were guarding General Frederick Kroesen (Commander in Chief of United States Army Europe and Commander of NATO’s Central Army Group) and his wife who were in Heidelberg at that time. Terrorists, probably Belgians, attack his limousine with rocket propelled grenades and gunfire. The surprise terrorist attack failed, due to the quick action and defense of Sayre's men and the fact that the General's Mercedes limo was armour plated and bulletproof. Aside from that close incident, the only remotely close act of terrorism on Sayre's watch occurred when a man was caught with a .22 while spying in on Sayre's officer's club. The man was captured, and then released. Sayre tried to reward the MP who caught the man but was instructed not too. Why? Again, because of the military prowess of Sayre and his men, their discovery of this one man and his release, led them back to his safe house, broke down the entire command structure of the Red Army Faction and took it's leader, Christian Clare--commander of Bader Meinhof--into military custody.

So revered and praised for his devotion to his men and duty to the cause of freedom and democracy, 1LT. Scott Sayre's tour was extended and he led his men on for another 4 months.

Virginia needs true leadership. We need a leader who will run his Senate seat effectively and purposefully. We need a leader whom his followers can trust. Scott Sayre is that leader. He has proven himself worthy--not only in the business world--but in a country whose world was at war.

Emmett Hanger – Out of Step

GOP Hokie has some great info up on the Family Foundation Ratings here. Of interest to me was Emmett Hanger receiving a 86. Emmet falls short of real leaders like Chris Saxman, Ben Cline, and Steve Landis who all received 100. It seems Hangers tax vote and school choice votes have cost him and left him out of step with the others. His opponent Scott Sayre is anti tax and pro school choice. GOP Hokie wonders if this will be a issue. Yes, It already is. Sayre has campaigned on the tax and school choice platform.
This leaves me wondering why Saxman, Landis, and Cline have not endorsed Sayre? It seems his platform is more instep with them than Hanger. But, they have not endorsed the incumbent Hanger either. Go figure.

Hanger: Pot Calls Kettle Black

Emmett Hanger seemingly criticized consumers who took advantage of low interest rates to build these big houses, and buy these gas guzzling cars, and now the taxes to pay for these amenities are coming back to bite them.

This revelation came about on the latest The New Dominion Podcast.

Well Emmett how about a little introspection on your and the 'Senate Leaderships' part. While the General Assembly was enjoying high revenues, as a matter of fact high enough revenues to double the Commonwealth's budget in the last ten years didn't the General Assembly build us a big tax guzzling Government?

This is literally how 'out of touch' Emmett Hanger and the Senate Leadership are and literally how they view those stupid Virginians pursuing the American Dream?

This same Leadership spent an anticipated 6.5% in projected growth in tax revenues but come to find out our economy could only provide an increase of 3.5% in new tax revenue. As a matter of fact Emmett admits in the podcast that the Senate Finance Committee was aware of the slowdown in the new home building market, but took no steps to account for it, or if they did, just plain blow it!

Now of course we all know what happens when we have a budget shortfall right? The 'gap' needs to be bridged with new and or higher taxes, doesn't it? However, you have all those people who are just 'Mad at the World', and do stuff like volunteer at the grassroots level of the Republican Party, and/or sign crazy things like 'No New Taxes Pledges'.

SWAC GIRL has a good post here highlighting the latest MisLeader attempt to 'inform' their readers about Scott Sayre's positions on the issues! An excerpt:

In today's Staunton News Leader it happened again. The title says, "Sayre: Anti-tax, anti-immigrant." If you read no further you would leave thinking Scott Sayre was anti-immigrant. But knowing that was not true, I read the letter and found it said he was anti-illegal immigrant.

Here's the letter judge for yourself what it said.

Now let's look at Scott Sayre's Website, and his position on immigration, and now for the rest of the story:

Immigration Reform
Our nation was built by immigrants -- hard-working, law abiding citizens who spent their lives building a better future for their children and grandchildren. Immigrants built this great nation. Because of the greatness of America and the freedoms and opportunities we enjoy, our nation is a magnet for the world. We are also a nation of laws and we must protect these laws or lose our liberties.
All immigrants must begin their journey in the United States with respect for our laws, and the respect of our fellow Americans. Those who violate the law by entering this country illegally are diminishing the American Dream for those who have, with patience and commitment, pursued a path to citizenship in a legal manner.
As a state acting alone it is difficult, if not impossible, to stop the flow of illegal immigrants. This is a problem that needs a comprehensive national solution. But this does not mean that we should sit idly by. We have an ability to remove incentives for illegal immigrants to come or stay in our Commonwealth.
I will support legislation to:
Preserve and protect in-state tuition at state colleges and universities only for those who are citizens and legal residents of Virginia. I would not support my opponent's sponsored bill, SB 677, and SB 1204 granting in-state tuition to illegal immigrants.
Propose legislation requiring verification of legal employment on a quarterly basis.
Hold illegal immigrants charged with a felony without bail.
Require identification when voting and ensure that all non-citizens are removed from the voter roles.
Allow for litigation when an employer knowingly hires illegal aliens and harms a law-abiding competitor.
Language is a common denominator which unites cultures. Generations of immigrants have come to our shores, embraced our language and assimilated into our American culture. I see no need to accommodate the rising tide of immigrants by changing the way we have done business for hundreds of years. I support Congressman Goodlatte's efforts to make English the official language of the United States .

Why let businesses wait until February of every year to get illegal immigrant W-2's returned. Identify the illegal immigrants now and solve the problem or face litigation.

Sayre's Military Legacy

Scott Sayre is a military man. I’m sure that if he wasn’t married to Mary, he’d still be wed to the armed forces. Not only was he hitting the front lines himself, combating the evils of terrorism, his lineage is one of a true, patriotic, fighting-for-liberty ancestry.

The most notable of which was Francis Bowes Sayre—a cousin to Scott Sayre—he has the distinction of being the son-in-law to President Woodrow Wilson. Francis Bowes Sayre began his tenure in the government by serving (beginning in 1923) as the Foreign Advisor to the King of Siam. As most of you should know, that was during the push of western imperialism into 3rd world countries…and with that came unjust tariffs and laws. It was Sayre who befriended the King and soon got countries like England, France, Great Britain Portugal, and Spain to get these unjust treaties revoked.

After serving as a distinguished professor at Harvard Law School he was commissioned FDR to be the High Commissioner of the Philippines in 1939. While there, during the attack and bombardment of Corregidor, he waited out the storm of bombs in the bunker with General Douglas MacArthur. Later, in 1942, fearing capture, he was able to escape at the last moment under the cover of night by submarine.

Later on his life, Francis Bowes Sayre became a Christian missionary in the less-than-friendly regions of Japan.

It looks as though the military and spiritual legacy of Francis Bowes Sayre has run through the family tree and has touched Scott, so many years later. If what the United States experienced when Sayre defended it, is anything like what the leadership of Scott Sayre has to offer Virginia, there should not be a shadow of a doubt—Scott Sayre is the right man for the job.

Senator Hanger & the 'Gas Tax'

If Emmett Hanger had his way SB 708 would be law and Virginia's consumer would be subject to a 5% per gallon tax on the wholesale price of gasoline in addtion to the $.35 cents a gallon we pay now. The IBD chart says $37.7, but I have always heard $.35.

At $2.50 per gallon (wholesale) the extra tax would bring the total per gallon to $47.5 cents, at $3.00 (seems where we're going) it will be $.50 per gallon.

Take a look at the chart I borrowed from Investors.com and at $.50 cents per gallon it would move Virginia into ninth place for highest gas taxes in the nation. It would actually be higher than NJ's $32.9 cents per gallon. Now we have heard quite a bit about Virginia being a great state to do business, but increases in taxes on a commodity like gasoline along with what has obviously been an exponential growth of the Commonwealth's budget in general over the past ten years is going to eventually drag our business environment down.

Seriously, why couldn't our General Assembly hold the line on the growth of our annual budget which has doubled in only the last 10 years, while the population has only grown 10%, and inflation has been only 2 to 3% annually? Now all the talk is about our coming budget deficit whereby the GA projected a 6.5% increase in revenues and our economy was only able to come up with 3.5%?

There is a simple solution to that, and it has to do with changing the Leadership in the VA General Assembly's Senate. Scott Sayre says "Let's stimulate business to encourage revenue growth". Now that's pretty Reaganesque thinking and I like that. Scott is a businessman that has had the burden of meeting a payroll, dealing with governmental Red Tape and regulations. He knows business, and he knows what businesses need to thrive.

Russ Potts and Chichester are gone, and we're working on one more here in the 24th. It is time for a change. Let's Thank Senator Hanger for his public service, and bring in some new blood.

As a conservative Republican, I am a strong advocate for fiscal responsibility, but recognize that the term fiscal responsibility may or may not mean lowering taxes and it may or may not mean reducing spending, but it always should mean providing necessary services in as efficient a manner as is possible and within the constraints of a balanced budget.

Here's my question for Senator Hanger: does he honestly believe the current $70+ billion monstrosity of a budget is "providing necessary services in as efficient a manner as is possible"?

Dem echos call for lower taxes

Will Hrovat is a Democrat seeking his party's nomination in the 24th Senate District. Not too much has surfaced regarding Hrovat's platform, but one message that he has reiiterated is tax reform. In today's News Leader, David Royer reports, "If elected, he said, he would work for a middle-class tax cut."

I'm not sure what I am more suprised about, the fact that a Democrat is advocating lower taxes, or the fact that all three of Emmett Hanger's opponents are advocating lower taxes.

Republican challenger Scott Sayre writes:

I believe it's time we send a message to the career politicians in Richmond that enough is enough - that Virginia citizens have had enough of higher taxes and spiraling government spending. Those who say higher taxes are the only answer are just plain wrong.

Libertarian Arin Sime echos Sayre saying:

"As a small business owner, Arin sees first-hand how heavy taxation burdens everyday people and Virginia’s economy. Many in Richmond, especially in the State Senate, apparently believe that the state must take even more of your money to fund their pet projects. Arin knows the state has already taken more than enough money to fund core responsibilities of government; what the politicians and bureaucrats in Richmond really need is fiscal restraint and respect for your rights."

Senator Hanger has labled low tax advocates as "extremists". Then, in defense of his position
said, "taxes are part of a civilized society, and must be looked at based on how equitable they are and what services they fund."

He further states:

I recognize that the term fiscal responsibility may or may not mean lowering taxes and it may or may not mean reducing spending, but it always should mean providing necessary services in as efficient a manner as is possible and within the constraints of a balanced budget.

Sounds like on the tax issue, Hrovat and Hanger have swapped parties.

Yet the question begs to be asked--if all three of the challengers are advocating a lower tax, doesn't that send a message to the Senator that voters in the 24th are fed up with his tax hikes?

The tale of two General Assembly Bills addressing In-State Tuition for Illegal Immigrants. Emmett Hanger bill SB 1204, and Delegate John Reid's HB 1050.

Elle does a great post here on Hanger's bill that provides a loop hole for Illegal Immigrants to get In-State Tuition. Hangers amendment to allow it:

D. Notwithstanding the provisions of subsection A, any person shall be eligible for in-state tuition who:

1. Has resided with his parent, guardian, or other person standing in loco parentis while attending a public or private high school in this state;

2. Has graduated from a public or private high school in Virginia;

3. Has resided in the Commonwealth for at least three years as of the date the individual graduated from high school;

4. Has registered as an entering student in an institution of higher education;

5. Has provided an affidavit to the institution stating that he has filed an application to become a permanent resident of the United States and is actively pursuing such permanent residency or will do so as soon as he is eligible; and

6. Has submitted evidence that he, or in the case of a dependent student, at least one parent, guardian, or person standing in loco parentis, has filed, unless exempted by state law, Virginia income tax returns for at least three years prior to the date of enrollment.

Delegate Reid's bill summary is thus:

In-state tuition for aliens. Provides that an alien who is unlawfully present in the United States, and therefore ineligible to establish domicile pursuant to § 23-7.4, shall not be eligible on the basis of residency within Virginia for any postsecondary educational benefit, including in-state tuition, unless citizens or nationals of the United States are eligible for such benefits in no less an amount, duration, and scope without regard to whether such citizens or nationals are Virginia residents. This bill incorporates H.B. 1135.

If this doesn't illustrate the 'Gulf' of philosophy between the House and the Senate, what does? That is why we need to elect Scott Sayre to the 24th seat in the VA Senate! Scott's Conservative philosophy matches with the House, which will only help Delegates Landes, Saxman and Cline.

Meanwhile, Hanger came to our SWAC breakfast a couple months ago and tried to explain away his reasoning for allowing this loophole. He stated that his bill was to allow an Iraq War Veteran, who fit this criteria to get In-State Tuition.

Now the response to this is simple. That Veteran has a myriad of college funding options provided by good Ol' Uncle Sam, as he should! Our Commonwealth also has incentives and benefits, for his service to the US and us Virginians. The problem is that a conversation with our Augusta County Sheriff, Randy Fisher will reveal that illegal aliens are trafficking methamphetamines into our region! I would care to venture that there are hundreds, if not thousands of illegal aliens doing bad things that should not be rewarded.

If some of these illegals doing bad things are eligible for In-State tuition, how proud will Hanger be of that?' His record is already more than lacking in addressing this meth trafficking anyhow, by not getting us our full complement of State Troopers to help combat this situation!

The choice she is clear, it's time for change in the 24th District!

Meanwhile, Hanger says "We're Extremists", and "Three out of four candidates agree, our taxes are too high"! Also Spark It Up asks "Emmett-Potts".

Slantin MisLeader at it again

One thing that we can count on around here in the Valley is the sun to rise in the east and the Staunton News Leader to be the most unbiased newspaper on the face of the entire planet. Check it out for yourself, today's article "Democrat Sets Sights on 24th", must have the nicest, purtiest, picture of anyone I have ever seen in a news paper short of the bridal section.

We're talking a Jimmy Carter smile,( just with less hair) is the featured photo of Will Hrovat, DEMOCRAT running for Senate.

Meanwhile in the article, Dennis Neal (Editor Extraordinaire) accomplished what he has been hoping for all the time, getting rid of Scott Sayre... Look at the Debate announcement at the end of the article:

"Hrovat becomes the first Democrat to express interest publicly in the 24th District seat. Hanger, a 12-year incumbent, faces a challenge from fellow Republican Scott Sayre and Libertarian Arin Sime.A debate between Hanger and Sime is scheduled for May 29, the same day as the Democratic caucus. "

Hello Dennis, Scott Sayre is going to be there too... Hello... ohhh, that's right, maybe we want to put an impression in the oh, so gullible public's mind, that 'Scott Sayre is Afraid to debate the issues'.

You know what I think? Dennis Neal, and the Slantin MisLeader is afraid to print the news without getting some sort of bias in there that doesn't favor Conservatives...

Look at how they started this article written by David Royer, "Sayre's Primary Challenge has some contemplating a Democratic win":

STAUNTON — Valley Republicans are caught between a rock-solid conservative and an anti-tax newcomer in the June 12 primary.
But some worry that a split primary ticket could cost the GOP a reliable seat in the Senate's 24th District this year. "I think we could lose our seat," said Libby Welsh of Staunton. "It tears our party apart when you run somebody who runs as a Republican against an incumbent."

Rock-solid Conservative? Emmett Hanger? Why not Rock-Ribbed-Reagan-Republican! and as for Sayre.. anti-tax newcomer... Look at the wording... Emmett gets an edification in the word association, while Sayre gets this, "anti" (negative), "newcomer" (amateur)

Then you get a quote that implies that the Republicans are splitting the ticket in a election. I guess that would make sense except for the fact that it's a primary, only one Republican comes out with the nomination....

oh, well, that's just good Hard-Hitting Editorial..errrr, I mean Hard-Hitting Journalism...

I just wonder if Dennis is upset that we have given 'water boy' status to someone else...

SB 708 Emmett Gas: Put a Tax in Your Tank!

Emmett Gas is actually looking pretty cheap, We Need an Update!

Check out the details/summary in SB 708:

Funding of transportation in the Commonwealth. Provides several mechanisms for funding transportation in the Commonwealth.
The bill would provide that all moneys credited to specified transportation-related funds shall be solely used for the purposes set forth therein relating to the funding and maintenance of highways (including access roads and bikeways adjacent thereto), public transportation, congestion mitigation, railways, seaports, and airports; making payments on bonds and obligations related to funding transportation projects; or making loans to finance transportation projects.
The bill would raise new revenues for transportation by (i) imposing an additional $200 fee upon certain convictions relating to violations of Virginia's driving laws; (ii) imposing annually additional fees on any driver with a driver's record having a balance of 8 or more demerit points; (iii) increasing motor vehicle registration fees by $10 for all vehicles and doubling the gross weight registration fee for vehicles weighing more than 10,000 pounds; (iv) increasing current liquidated damages for violations of any weight limit imposed under law or for violations of any weight limit included in a permit that has been issued; (v) imposing additional liquidated damages of $20 for every violation of any weight limit imposed under law or any weight limit included in a permit that has been issued; (vi) increasing the state grantor's tax to 30 cents for each $100 of value with the revenues from the increase in the tax distributed to the respective locality and required to be used for local or regional transportation projects; (vii) authorizing local governments to impose a local grantor's tax at the rate of 10 cents for each $100 of value with the revenues to be used for local or regional transportation projects; (viii) increasing the motor fuels tax on diesel fuel to 17.5 cents per gallon (the current rate of the motor fuels tax on gasoline and gasohol); (ix) imposing a 5% tax on motor fuels that would be based on the statewide average retail price of a gallon of self-serve unleaded regular gasoline over rolling six-month periods and that would be imposed at a cents per gallon rate; and (x) increasing the motor vehicle sales and use tax from 3% to 3.75%, phased-in over fiscal years 2007, 2008, and 2009. The bill would also dedicate for transportation purposes all insurance license tax revenues relating to automobile insurance policies.
The bill would allow individuals to apply for a refund of any motor fuels tax paid in excess of 17.5 cents per gallon. Individuals would apply for a refund when the cumulative amount of the refund would exceed $5.

Triple the Grantors Tax, Double Registration taxes on Trucks, $10 more on all vehicles, TAX, TAX, TAX! Our Rates are still lower than New Jersey's!!! This Can not be!!! Raise em!

This bill was so ugly, that it had the insane notion that you didn't have to pay the 5% wholesale gas tax if you just simply saved your receipts and took them down to the friendly people at DMV. Seriously, that is fighting to make government more efficient? How many more people would have to be hired at DMV to dispense the reimbursements?

Transportation (I81)--More revenue v. Creative Solutions

It is no secret that transportaiton is a hot-button issue. The Valley experiences a high degree of frustration, because it seems as though most of the monies are sent to NOVA and Tidewater, and very little is given to address the issue of Truck Route 81. As an individual who is on 81 almost everyday, I have to say, we need help!

Those of you who drive I81 understand. There are 2 speed limits; very slow or very fast (trucks usually set the pace). I have learned trucker edicate, that's for sure. I had to, or else my fuel efficient mini-car would be run off the road (actually, that has happened twice now).

Things were looking up 2 years ago when there was discussion centering on I81. There were proposals involving rail, extra lanes, tolls, and misc. band-aid approaches. There was actually a lot of talk. Then there was more talk. Then the talk turned into chatter and the chatter turned into mumbles and we still have major issues on I81 and it seems like there is a deafening silence.

So I was curious and decided to take a look at what Hanger and Sayre were saying themselves about solutions to our I81 problems.

Senator Hanger states:

"There is no question, based on current policy; that we do not have adequate revenue coming into the Transportation Trust Fund to pay for existing needs.".

Editors note: Senator Hanger wasn't kidding. In 2006, he voted for SB 708 twice, which based on FY 2007 projections, would have added $114 million for mass transit, $662 million for highway contruction and $210 million for local and regional projects. This money cwould have come from several sources including an increase in motor vehicle tax, increase in gas tax, increase in vehicle registration fees and increase in auto insurance tax to name just a few. Thankfully the bill died in the House.

Hanger continues

"I do not support the impact fees that were authorized, but some of the growth management tools may prove helpful. The biggest shortcoming of the funding package, in my opinion was that it relies totally on taxes and fees that are paid by just Virginians and do not extend to the out-of-state motorists and truckers that use our highways."

Editors note: Once again, more talk about "funding". And, Hanger's statement is contradictory to his previously noted votes, both in committee and on the floor, on SB 708.

Next Hanger says:

"We recently created a Transportation Accountability Commission, to provide some additional oversight from the legislature on the implementation of transportation policy. I have been appointed to serve on this Commission."

In summation, from what I gather, Hanger's solution is to raise more money and sit on a commission to discuss policy.

What does Sayre have to say? On his website he states:

It's time for us to prioritize state spending on core functions of government: public safety, education, and transportation...What we have found thus far is the need to fund and build climbing lanes on several stretches of I-81 in the 24th District. Here are some simple solutions:

1. Enact a Constitutional Amendment to Protect the Transportation Trust
Fund. The Trust Fund has been repeatedly raided to fund non-transportation
spending.

2. Reform VDOT so that it is responsive to the needs of the people. Have
you ever sat at a red light waiting for it to turn green - and worse there was
no one else in the intersection - just there alone wasting time and fuel?

3. Allow for more citizen involvement in the process and expand public
private partnership initiatives to ensure even greater private involvement in
road building, maintenance and construction.

4. Educate our drivers to Drive in the right lane and Pass in the left
lane.

The stark difference between Hanger and Sayre is obvious. Hanger, having been in Richmond for many years, sees the fix as an obvious increase in revenue sources. Sayre, a businessman, seeks a four-fold solution which includes driver education and an amendment to lock up transportation funding. The dollars are already out there--we have a huge surplus. Let's use the money that exists.

Hanger Blurring Party Lines in Augusta?

An interesting conversation occurred in the comments thread of the post "Are Breeden's, Pyles Hands Tied?". I felt that the conversation regarding Pyles and Hanger should be explored a bit further .

According to sources in Augusta County, Democrat board of supervisors member Tracy Pyles was going to run unchallenged. Some GOP party members and elected officials were reasonably satisfied with Pyles work and did not see if necessary to challenge him.

However, Pyles made the fateful decision to enter into Republican politics (which seems to be a violation of the state democratic party plan). He united with other elected officials and endorsed Senator Emmett Hanger for the 24th Senate Republican primary. This begs the question, why would a democrat get involved with, and endorse, a Republican candidate? What was the agreement made between Hanger and Pyles?

The problem is, this altruistic gesture has come back to bite him (for lack of a better term). The Augusta County Republican Committee has lined up a candidate and now Mr. Pyles has competition.

This leads us to pose the next (series of) question(s)--what will Emmett Hanger do? After all, he solicited the endorsement of Supervisor Pyles. Will he return the favor and endorse Pyles? If he does this, he breaks with the party and endorses a Democrat over a Republican (wonder how that will play out in the polls).

If he endorses the Republican candidate, then is he disloyal to Tracy Pyles. And remember, it was Hanger who got Pyles into this mess in the first place.

On the flip side, what will Pyles do now that there is a Democrat candidate (William Hrovat) in the race? What will Tom Long and the Augusta County Democrat party do with this apparent renegade? And, who will Pyles endorse? There appears to be a division amongst dems in Augusta County, with Pyles supporting a Republican and Long working with the Democrat.
Hold on to your seats folks, this is going to be one wild ride.

The Valley Children’s Center is a non-profit agency designed to reduce the trauma and advance the recovery of abused and neglected children. The Center provides a comfortable, private, child-friendly setting where abused and neglected children can be interviewed by a trained Forensic Interviewer in partnership with Law Enforcement and Child Protective Services. These interviews are recorded for use by the Commonwealth’s Attorney to enhance the investigation of abuse allegations.

The Center also offers the following services:
-Immediate crisis intervention counseling to the victim, non-offending caregivers and siblings.
-A SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) program for medical evaluations of victims to be performed locally at Augusta Medical Center.
-Programs to enhance our community’s understanding of child abuse and neglect through public awareness campaigns and educational components in local schools.

Andy Clem has decided the Republican Party can washout low-tax folks like us. He came up with this revelation upon reading this section in the party creed: "That fiscal responsibility and budgetary restraints must be exercised at all levels of government" (RPV).

Andy then waxes philosophical (emphasis in original):

Fiscal responsibility -- i.e., making sure you've got enough money to pay the bills -- does not mean cutting taxes, the fad which Scott Sayre and many on the Right espouse these days. Indeed, it could be construed as justifying tax increases when necessary.

It all sounds perfectly reasonable; doesn't it? Unfortunately for Andy, he forgot (or ignored) the other part of the creed plank: budgetary restraints. That means holding the line on spending and cutting unnecessary waste. Now, it does not include stopping the government from doing things it should not do. That is covered in the first plank of the Virginia Republican Creed: "That the free enterprise system is the most productive supplier of human needs and economic justice." In other words, the less that government does, the better.

Of course, Andy's real target in all this is our buddy Chris Green, who mistakenly believed low taxes were written by name into the platform. Chris may have had his syntax wrong, but it is abundantly clear upon reading the entire creed in context that its thrust is limited government, minimal spending, and lower taxes.

Chris didn't remember the exact words of the VRC. Andy twisted the creed to claim it says something it doesn't. I'll take the honest mistake over the intellectually dishonest half-truth any day.

Are Breeden's, Pyles hands tied?

The 24th District Senate race is heating up. In Rockingham County, Mr. William Hrovat of Churchville, announced last night his intention to seek the Democratic nomination. According to the Daily News Record, Hrovat is a retired power plant operator for Dominion Power.

The addition of Mr. Hrovat, adds more spark into an already tense race. As has been widely reported, the Republican primary took an interesting turn in April, when Emmett Hanger sought the endorsements of local elected officials. We are all aware of the comments made by Hanger at that event which prompted the endorsements of grassroots party leaders for Scott Sayre.

However just when the dust began to settle, a Democrat enters the race. The obvious question people are asking is, which Republican do the Democrats have a better shot of winning against?

I think that Jeff Mellott with the Daily News Record raises an even more interesting question--who will Rockingham Democratic Board of Supervisor Mike Breeden ultimately endorse? Back in April, Breeden had stood side by side with his fellow supervisors in their endorsement of Senator Emmett Hanger.

Breeden is not the only Democratic elected official caught in this bind. As SWAC Girl discusses on her blog, Augusta County Board of Supervisor Tracy Pyles has endorsed Hanger as well.

Will Breeden and Pyles break with their party and continue to stand by Hanger, or will they rescind their endorsement and walk lock step with their party faithful?

Hrovat: Reduce the Tax Burden!

According to this Daily News article even the Democrat William Hrovat coming forward to challenge the winner of the Scott Sayre vs. Sen. Emmett Hanger has this to say about taxes:

Candidate for Change
Hrovat told nearly 30 Democrats that he is running for change. What is needed, he said, is a candidate who understands the problems of working people. “It’s a real tragedy,” he said, of their burden.Hrovat, a power-plant operator for Dominion Power for 25 years, said he would like to seek ways to reduce the tax burden.“Government has done very little in the past 25 years for the working people,” he said.

Even the Democrats know that Sen. Emmett Hanger has raised taxes too much, and it's hilarious that even the Dems know Emmett is vulnerable on his consistent voting record of raising taxes.

Obviously, there are three candidates that agree on the tax issue. Scott Sayre, Arin Sime, and now William Hrovat. When will Senator Hanger admit that he is just 'Out of Touch' with the people of the 24th district. If this were not the case, how come three out of four candidates agree on the issue?

Seeing as how the 24th District is holding a Republican primary, with Republican candidates, it is a fairly safe bet that each contender does not differ drastically. That having been said, we are looking at two distinct individuals, with separate backgrounds, experiences and influences which they bring to the table. I wanted to take a look at each candidate to draw a comparison.

I visited their websites to see how each candidate was representing themselves. During my days as a webmaster, we used to say that the Homepage was the most important piece of real estate. This was where you predominantly "sold" your message. If you could capture the reader's attention, then they would delve in for more. I wanted to see and compare how these two gentlemen sold themselves.

Senator Hanger begins pleasantly enough, thanking supporters for the honor of representing them. He is courteous and polite for 2 paragraphs and then he says:

"As a member of the leadership of the Senate, my primary focus is to work for the best interests of the almost 200,000 citizens I am entrusted to represent, not necessarily the sometimes narrow viewpoint of any particular so called “conservative” group or local Republican unit that may be controlled by outsiders or special interest groups that may have an agenda that is not appropriate for our area."

He follows this vitriolic rant with the following:

"There are people out there that apparently think that politics gives you a license to misrepresent the truth (some people call that lying); and there are people that are so mean-spirited and partisan that it reflects poorly on them and all of us that engage in the process."

After those brief, but not so subtle attacks, Hanger proceeds back to pleasantries for the duration.

Scott Sayre welcomes voters to his site, with a brief autobiography as an introductory to the elements that have shaped and molded him. He tells voters what is important to him and then he says:

"I’m looking forward to working for the people of the 24th District in the State Senate. With your support, I will bring my values – and the values of our district – with me.

I’m asking for your prayers, hard work, support – but most importantly – your vote.I look forward to seeing you on the campaign trail.Thank you and God Bless."

When Sayre announced he was running, he pledged to run a positive campaign. It is obvious that he is honoring that pledge. I looked for a negative attack, a subtle jibe, even an off-colour joke, but could find none.

In the grand scheme of things, I have not been involved in politics for an abundantly long period of time. However, I have worked with enough campaigns to know that when a candidate begins to negatively attack, it is because they either 1) have not honed their message or 2) have no message to present. In regards to message, Conservative Viewpoints has an excellent post.

I would sincerely encourage Mr. Hanger to reconsider his opening page. Negative campaigning is the sign of a desperate candidate and it does not play favourably with the voters.

Presidents Kennedy, Reagan and Bush 43 knew that cutting taxes creates jobs, wealth and increases government revenues.

The Commonwealth had more than a 7% INCREASE in revenue in the Fall of 2003. Yet you raised taxes for the largest increase in Virginia history with a regressive tax that punishes the poor and people on a fixed income.

What do you know about economic laws that is different from Kennedy-Reagan-Bush? Where did you learn that difference?

If you don’t know a different economic law, then why did you reject their wisdom and vote like an economics science-challenged Democrat?

That is a hard one to answer, because the question is based on several pieces of erroneous information. Please refer to my website, emmetthanger.com for detail on what “tax reform” was about. “Largest tax increase in Virginia history” is a sound bite with no basis in reality. While I support President Bush on a lot of things, his economic and fiscal policy stinks. We have racked up over $1.6 trillion in new debt in 6 years. I don’t call that fiscally conservative at all. Virginia is in strong financial position, our economy is thriving, our quality of life is second to none, our relative tax burden is low and I am pleased that I have played a role in keeping our budget balanced and meeting our commitments to local governments. We can do better, but we are a leader in this nation again. That is a very good thing!

What was the erroneous info? The largest tax hike in history? The fact that revenue was increasing when they raised taxes? Basic economics?

C'mon, name what is erroneous.

So, you are AGAINST the Bush tax cuts and the booming economy.

The debt, which is receding and is an increasingly smaller per cent of GDP, is caused by spending - not tax cuts!

Hanger vs Sayre - Doers vs Talkers

The Conservative Voice supplied me with a path to some good info on the Emmett Hanger vs Scott Sayre republican primary in Virginia's 24^th district. Jamie's post Does Senator Hanger deserve re-election strictly based on seniority? brings up a good question. Should Hanger get a bye for his support of a $1.4 billion dollar tax increase? He voted for a transportation plan that raises taxes on his district, yet helps the said district in no way. Hanger also wanted a increased gas tax? Damn, could you feel the effect of that about now? This is a issue that just makes me sick – Hanger supports In State Tuition for illegal immigrants. That makes me chew the cap off my C.A.O. Italia. I cant afford that! Scott Sayre said this at a recent meeting.

“I just don’t think it’s right to take my son or daughter’s college slot away and give it to an illegal immigrant - and even more than that, give it to somebody at in-state tuition rates. It’s not going to happen on my watch. I’ve seen two bills in the last two years presented, and that’s just not going to pass when I’m elected as your senator”

The article then sends you to this-Hanger, Sayre speak to splintered Staunton Republicans by Steven Winslow. Mr Winslow attended the meeting and describes the event is good detail. Sayre gave a great speech showing his vision for the district and state while Hanger points out I have seniority. He reports that “Sayre, who was forced endure what could only be described as uncomfortable and unfortunate behavior exhibited by a small but vocal group of Hanger supporters at the gathering.” (That is easy to believe. Just look at the bloggers who are supporting Hanger and their own behavior) Seniority at what Sen Hanger? Voting for things that hurt your constituents, your district, and our state? Winslow's conclusion is worth quoting here:

“While Emmitt Hanger settles into a campaign he considers a story of experience and seniority, Sayre chooses to address his plans to find solutions to issues like taxes, transportation, and immigration, based on his experience as a successful entrepreneur who started a business out of his garage and turned it into Sayre Enterprises. Both are successful men, but their presentations create stark contrasts in what they believe are the important elements in choosing the next Senator representing the 24th district.”

Indeed. The SWAC crowd has taken some heat for supporting Sayre. There have been so called Latarians, Whackjobs, and Garstangs complaining. Who are they to attack a group of people who are fed up with Hanger? The SWAC'ers are working hard and documenting that hard work on their blogs while the Hanger crowd attacks them via keyboard. A plain case of the 'Doers vs the Talkers”...The legislation Hanger has supported speaks for itself and I cant blame them for wanting a change. Yes it is time for a change. Now that there's a Democrat in the race

According to the New Dominion (h/t Now at the Podium), the Democrats have an (unnamed) candidate to run in the general election for the 24th State Senate seat. It's been at least two and a half hours since then, and surprisingly, I have yet to see a Hanger supporter seize upon this as "proof" that only their man can win the general election. Still, we all know they'll get around to that line of argument eventually, so allow me to debunk it now.

The fact is, this will be a three-way race in November; the candidates will be Libertarian Arin Sime, the unnamed Democrat, and either Hanger or Sayre. Conventional wisdom holds that Hanger, as the moderate, will be better positioned in the general election. The trouble is, Hanger and Sayre only disagree on one major issue - taxes. Thus, the only voters Hanger can gain in a general election that Sayre cannot are "big-government conservatives," i.e., folks who tack right on social issues but are OK with tax hikes of the Warner and Chichester variety. The problem for Hanger is that there aren't many of those voters left, far fewer than the anti-tax voters who will leave him in droves for the self-described pro-life libertarian Arin Sime, who will be in prime position to attack Hanger from the right.

In other words, Sime and Hanger will battle for the support of the conservative majority in the 24th, leaving the Democrat to have the liberal minority entirely to himself (or herself), and putting said Democrat in position to "sneak up the middle" if Sime can take enough votes away from Hanger.

Sayre, by contrast, will be able to hold those voters with him. Sime will have to oppose Sayre from the left, in which case he and the Democrat will be fishing in the same pond. So in a general election, Sime and the Democrat will battle for the liberal minority while Sayre has the conservative majority all to himself, and as such, he (Sayre) will cruise to victory.

Hanger will have no such luck in a general election. The nature of the district and the state of the race make him the weaker general election nominee compared to Sayre, not the stronger one.

Refreshing prospect...

One of the main attributes that Scott Sayre brings to this campaign is his history and knowledge of creating, developing, and improving a successful business from it’s inception to where it is now.

I find the prospects of incorporating successful business practices into our state government refreshing and well worth looking into. IBD (Investors Business Daily) has a very good article on how Americans donate and provide more than $2 billion in food aid each year to poor countries, but at times the government is inefficient in its efforts.

“The U.S. is the world's largest food donor, handing out 4 million metric tons, or more than half the world's total. Whenever and wherever there's famine, we help. But as a new Government Accountability Office report shows, we don't do it very efficiently.”

“Fully 65% of our food aid budget goes to overhead, leaving just 35% to directly help the poor in famine areas. Even the United Nations looks efficient by comparison; it manages to squander "only" 50% of its own food budget on overhead.”

Private organizations may not be able to handle the high volume of aid that the United States provides to other countries, but this shows that government can learn and incorporate private business practices to improve efficiency.

Somebody taking what they learned about efficiency in the private business world to Richmond with them and looking out for the Virginia taxpayer.

I'm Not Emeril takes a critical view of the inevitable tax increases to come with Sen. Roscoe Reynolds 'Fully Funded School Plan', or whatever they plan to call it. An excerpt:

"The numbers are all over the place. Of course, anyone would expect local school districts to differ quite a bit on a per pupil basis when determining their budget. A school board puts together a budget, just like any other local agency, which is then approved or adjusted by the Board of Supervisors or City Council. Some counties can afford more per student than others, for example Arlington County spends $15,104 per pupil from local revenues and Buchanan County finds it can afford only $2,633 dollars of local revenue to spend on each student. That's logical and to be expected. Arlington County is a much more expensive place to live than Hurley, so the cost of operating Wakefield High School will be much higher than those associated with the operation of Hurley High School."

$15,000 per pupil? No wonder the VEA doesn't want Chris Saxman's School Choice Bill, some localities are already spending what you would think is the equivalent of Private School tuition.

"Political junkie" John Darden is now chief of staff for District 24 challenger Scott Sayre.

John Darden got his feet wet in politics as a Norfolk elementary student, campaigning for Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater in 1964.
Four decades later, the 53-year-old former Albermarle County GOP chair and self-described “political junkie” is a whirlwind of activity.
Darden is currently managing three Albemarle County political campaigns, including those of incumbent Commonwealth’s Attorney Jim Camblos, Republican Sheriff’s candidate Chip Harding and GOP Clerk of Court candidate John Dawson.
Of local interest is Darden’s work as a strategist and chief of staff for Senate District 24 Republican challenger Scott Sayre.Sayre is seeking to unseat incumbent Sen. Emmett Hanger.
The two candidates will face off in a June 12 GOP primary.“The last eight or nine years, I’ve looked at the person more,’’ said Darden, who runs a successful rent-to-own business in Charlottesville.
Of Sayre, Darden says, “he breeds confidence.”
Darden said voters are impressed with his business background, his degree from VMI and his stand on the issues, including not raising taxes and strict rules on immigration.
Darden said he became involved in the Sayre campaign after his son Chris, Waynesboro’s Republican chair, said of Sayre, “he’s the kind of candidate you’ve been looking for.”
Of Hanger, Darden said he is not right on the issues and has lost touch with constituents and others in his district.
“Former office holders have told me they never had contact with Hanger,’’ Darden said. “Now they are getting a phone call. There is a disconnect.”
Hanger, the incumbent, has helpers but is managing his own campaign.
He said the Sayre campaign continues to engage in hardball politics, and has misrepresented his stand on taxes.
“The latest ads say I’m proposing to raise taxes. It’s a very fraudulent ad,’’ said Hanger who said he is determined to get his message out.
Darden’s rise in Albemarle County Republican circles came during the start of former Virginia Gov. and U.S. Sen. George Allen’s political career.
Darden was involved in Allen’s 1982 run for the Virginia House of Delegates as an Albemarle County resident.
And last October, it was Darden who tackled liberal blogger Mike Stark at Charlottesville’s Omni Hotel after Stark aggressively questioned Allen about his first marriage.
After Darden restrained Stark, the two men fell to the hotel lobby floor and came close to crashing into a plate glass window.
The case was investigated by the Charlottesville Police Department and the Charlottesville Commonwealth’s Attorney did not press charges against Darden.
Darden said there was no intent to harm Stark, and said, “I was just trying to protect Sen. Allen.”
Darden said he tried to block Stark, and then asked him to leave.
“He started to pursue me, and I decided to take him down. He was clearly the aggressor. I was trying to protect a man I feel a great deal for,’’ he said.
Former Albemarle Del. Pete Way, who served in the House of Delegates from 1993 to 1999, notes Darden’s passion for politics and conservative causes.
“He’s been involved in campaigns for 25 years or so and definitely knows what he is doing,’’ Way said.
He said Darden’s fiscal conservatism and disdain for Hanger’s support of a 2004 state sales tax increase were other motivations for his interest in the Hanger-Sayre primary race.
“Come election time he has been very helpful and was very supportive of me in the House,’’ Way said.
Darden said the next five weeks provide a tough challenge for Sayre.
“We see momentum but we’ve got five weeks to go,’’ he said.Darden said he expects the primary to be close and with a relatively low turnout.
“He’s been involved in politics 30 years and people know him,’’ Darden said of Hanger’s political experience.

"Sportsmen" ethics...

Had the opportunity to meet with Scott today for a short time and we spoke about my recent trip to Key West to work the World Sailfish tournament and the level of Sportsmanship that now exists in many tournaments. Scott is an avid Turkey hunter as well as Whitetail Deer sportsman and the level of ethical management within these sports are very impressive. Scott informed me of the progress made by organizations such as the Wild Turkey Federation and efforts to manage Whitetail deer populations for the benefit of the animals and their habitats.

I was surprised when Scott told me that both the wild Turkey as well as the Whitetail deer populations had in the past become dangerously threatened as the result of poor management and abuse. Sportsman became involved in the sense that they learned and understood that the species could\would not survive if they were not managed properly. Scott also told me of his efforts with other local sportsmen to manage and improve the habitats in the valley to allow these species to grow in numbers but yet not overpopulate to a point where the animals suffer from lack of food, range, and disease.

We spoke of the “ethics” involved in managing an organized hunt to protect both the animals and the sportsmen involved in the harvest. The ethics of taking only that which is needed as compared to a purely “trophy” or “numbers” hunt which does not respect the animal or the sport itself…

In speaking with Scott I told him of an incident which happened in the Sailfish tournament that I just returned from. Unlike in the past where Sailfish tournaments were judged by the number of dead Sailfish that each team could bring back to the dock, the World Sailfish tournament is a “Catch & Release” tournament. All Sailfish must be released alive and in good condition and no injuries to the fish are allowed. Circle hooks are now required for they are very less harmful to the fish and each boat is required to submit digital video of each fish caught to prove how many fish caught as well as to prove the fish was released in good condition. These improved “Sportsman Ethics” involve much more effort, care, and increased procedures to win a tournament but this format has been overwhelmingly accepted by the Sportfishing community and has improved\protected the Sailfish population.

During this past tournament I worked the “Committee boat” which monitored the radio reports of fish caught and tournament procedures. On the third and final day of fishing we received a call from a boat which was in the running for the $100,000 first prize that had a Sailfish which was “Bill-wrapped” with the leader. The “leader” is the first 12ft piece of fishing line which must be submitted for inspection after each fish is caught. Failing to submit the leader with the paperwork for each fish results in that fish being disqualified. In this incident the leader had become wrapped around the Sailfish bill and could not be removed without breaking it and being disqualified. The Captain called explaining the situation and that there were numerous other Sailfish around the boat that could not be caught and recorded until this fish was released. The fishing mate was ready to go into the water to swim with the 6ft Sailfish and attempt to retrieve the leader without hurting the fish but this is in violation of IGFA tournament rules. The team also did not want to harm the Sailfish in anyway in forcing a release. The Rules committee quickly met and determined that if a clear shot of the leader wrapped around the bill could be recorded with the digital video the leader could then be cut and the fish would be released unharmed and counted as a caught fish.

The example of “Sportsman Ethics” here is that the Captain could have easily killed that fish after taking video of the catch, retrieved the leader intact, and moved on to other Sailfish around the boat increasing the teams catch total. Instead these sportsman chose to protect the Sailfish and the true ethics of the sport and tournament when they were in a tight race for the $100,000 first prize. The team finished in the top three rankings of the tournament as well as being viewed as “Victors” by the other fishing teams…

A few years back during the Democratic Governor Mark Warner’s term in office he, along with then Democratic Lt. Governor Tim Kaine, raided the fund that was made up by licensing fees paid by Virginia Sportsman. I believe millions of dollars were transferred into the general fund by Warner and Kaine when they claimed Virginia was in danger of not maintaining “essential” services. Like the “Scare” tax pushed thru by Warner and Kaine with the help of some State Senators after 9\11, this transfer of Sportsmen fees was proved not needed and we now have a surplus of funds along with these higher tax rates.

I have not heard if the millions removed from the “Sportsmen fee” fund has ever been returned or if that money has disappeared like I fear the surplus will disappear when we are not looking. Just like if the tax rate will ever be lowered since it has been proven that this increased tax load on the Virginia Citizens was not really needed as claimed by Warner, Kaine, and some of our State Senators…

Sportsmen “Ethics” would not allow the abuse of a population by a higher and not warranted demand placed on that species.

Unfortunately Government “Ethics” do not seem to follow the same higher level by reducing the tax rate and allowing the Citizens of Virginia to keep more of what they earn. By allowing the people of Virginia to invest their earned money as they see fit and to their benefit.

I believe we need a State Senator who understands both “Sportsmen” and “Government” ethics and applies them to the benefit of the hard working Citizens of Virginia…

The bill allows Augusta County to charge a Septic fee. It doesn't say Augusta in the bill, but the only county that fits is Augusta. I guess he didn't want to make other counties jealous of your septic systems.

Emmett Hanger's economic model - New Jersey?

The moment I saw STD make reference to Hanger's mantra on taxes ("The purpose of tax reform is to emphasize sales tax and income tax and take the burden off of real estate tax"), the blood drained from my face, my heart nearly stopped dead, and the warnings clanged in my brain: I've heard this nonsense before, where I grew up.

Unlike the overwhelming majority (I think) of the B4S roster, I am not a native Virginian. My "formative" years (before college) were spent in a suburban township in northern New Jersey. More to the point, every single tax increase I ever witnessed in the state of my birth has been justified by a spurious claim to lower property taxes. The theory goes like this - the more revenue the state raises, the more it spends; the more the state spends, the less the local government has to spend; the less the locals have to spend, the less they have to tax.

When said like that, it sounds marginally logical. Of course, what they leave out is that this depends on the frugality of locally elected officials. If the locals are willing to spend money like water, then the entire notion collapses under its own heftier tax bills.

This may also explain why nearly every local official is coming out for Hanger: this tenuous link between state and local taxes give all of them cover to spend like drunken sailors, while Hanger blames anti-taxers for "forcing" said locals to tax and spend.

Of course, as in New Jersey, local officials down here never seem to get enough state money to slow down their own profligacy.

Meanwhile, I would also note with amusement that Hanger's argument focuses only on lowering (in theory) real estate taxes, for if he had said property taxes, then it would have brought the personal property tax (i.e., the "car tax") into the discussion.

There, Hanger and his tax-hiking buddies didn't help local officials and taxpayers, but shafted them. While most have focused on the income and sales tax hikes, the 2004 tax soak also included a ceiling on the amount headed to localities to cover the local car tax (it was suppose to rise in order to maintain a 70% car tax reduction in all localities). In particular, the legislation froze the amount for each county and city, regardless of the future increase in car prices or population. This means Valley voters (and, although it means far more to me than to others here, the Fredericksburg area) will see their car taxes go up nearly every single year - precisely because Hanger et al did the exact opposite of what they claim they wish to do. Rather than increase state funds for supposed local tax cuts, Hanger, Warner, et al left the locals high and dry.

However, Hanger's excuse is still valid for local officials, so they're sticking with him.

This gives a new dimension to this campaign. Electing Scott Sayre will not only send a message to Richmond to keep taxes low, but also to local officials: namely, that they can no longer jack up spending and expect the voters to blame Richmond for it.

Shenandoah Electric Shills for Emmett?

Looks like he got the Good Ol' Boy treatment in this article by editor Bill Sherrod, who aptly entitles the piece, "Hanger's Tune, Valley legislator picks public service over politics". A curious title itself since as the article states Hanger has been in politics for nearly 30 years. It begs the question was this article driven by politics as its published a little more than 30 days before the June 12th Republican Primary where is being challenged Scott Sayre for Emmett's Senate Seat.

Furthermore, the article is literally 'Emmett's Tune". It follows his life and career path, and let's us in on the little known fact Emmett's hoping to release a CD of his songs, and discretely mentions he's a member of the Shen Valley Co-op, you know, 'one of us'. Then we basically hear that his overriding concern is government efficiency, and he is interested in preserving farmland, as the article notes he established a farm-land preservation task force, and interestingly sponsored the original legislation to repeal the VA Estate Tax.

That fact really catches my eye, because Emmett declared himself a 'Teddy Roosevelt Republican', just last week, who championed the Estate Tax! Here are Teddy's views:

In addition to these there is every reason why, when next our system of
taxation is revised, the National Government should impose a graduated
inheritance tax, and, if possible, a graduated income tax. The man of
great wealth owes a peculiar obligation to the State, because he derives special
advantages from the mere existence of government.

Teddy's foreign policy was much better, regardless, it is curious he'd identify himself with a Republican who championed the current abomination known as the Graduated Income Tax, administered by our friends at the IRS!

The rest of the article literally lays out his defense of his tax increase strategy, with the 'oft heard' on the campaign trail, "The purpose of tax reform is to emphasize sales tax and income tax and take the burden off of real estate tax", mantra straight from the Hanger camp. The article then goes on to claim, what the Hanger Campaign asserts, "The net result of this for the people I represent has been a tax decrease, rather than a tax increase", end quote.

Following that is literally Emmett's Govt. resume, and apparently a hand picked quote from Hanger, "So far, my style seems to have resonated with the people I represent," Hanger says. "Its really just a matter of making friends and establishing relationships", end quote.

Apparently, one of those 'relationships' is with Shenandoah Valley Co-operative who in effect have just sent out a 2 page color campaign ad with a circulation of over 378,878 copies throughout the Shenandoah Valley, and beyond! Is this going to be listed as an in kind donation to his campaign? With a June issue yet to be published, fairness would dictate that the Scott Sayre story also be published so we can get to know Scott also?

The timing of this article stinks, and can hardly be considered news, since it fails to even mention that Emmett is facing a primary. It is billed as a 'Profile' piece.... I don't know what kind of rules Shen Valley Electric operates under, but they surely answer to their stockholders, who I assume are ultimately their customers. Didn't see Shen Electric listed in the News Leader run down of contributors, but I would think they should be on the June 3rd, report. What would be their argument that they shouldn't? Then again if they were listed it would get up to three contributors for that quarter from the 24th district.

I bet Emmett's reaction to this is just a big "Oh Shucks, now how could that happen?"

The New Dominion: We're "Mean & Nasty"

Emmett Gas Mean & Nasty? That is what Chris Graham says here:

"Respect is one of those mythical two-way streets - and Bloggers4Sayre has been doing its own share of the driving down the nasty side in recent weeks, with Photoshopped representations of Exxon gas-price signs with an “Emmett Gas” price sign to raise an issue with a proposal from Hanger to raise taxes on the purchase of gasoline to provide money for transportation improvements statewide and a representation of Hanger behind a radio microphone with a script in front of him reading “Fiction Radio” to draw attention to recent radio spots from the Hanger campaign critical of Sayre’s support from national antitax and antigovernment groups among the highlights."

How is a graphic that simply points out to the electorate that Sen Hanger voted to place a 5% tax on the wholesale price of gasoline mean & nasty? My question to the MSM is this, have you informed the public of this? Why is it that if we point it out we are mean and nasty?

OK, how about this 'Mean & Nasty' graphic highlighting the fact that on Senator Emmett Hanger 12 year 'watch' as our Senator Augusta County has been authorized 19 VA State Troopers, and the state has only funded 14? Where has the MSM, and/or the New Dominion been to cover that issue, say also over the past years.

Our area is a major conduit along I-81 & I-64 for metamphetamine traffic, and Senator Hanger has done nothing about it. In FY2006 our Commonwealth had a $900+ million dollar surplus, followed by a $623 million dollar surplus for 2007 (past session), and it roughly costs $100,000 per year per trooper. A senator is a powerful man, and if he wanted to get just one trooper per year budgeted in, and made it his priority to do so it can be done.

Sorry folks, Senator Hanger has been AWOL on the issue of Public Safety in addressing the metaphetamine trafficking in our area, just as he was AWOL last night at the Central Shenandoah Lodge FOP Meeting, after of course saying he would attend. Senator Hanger as of today, (and I pointed this out in the podcast) has not responded to my question of him on this same subject posed during Republitarians Q&A post, (4/30/7)and it is still not up, after Republitarians follow on post "Emmett's Been Busy" (5/3/7).

No story there? This reminds me of Leslie Nielsen's movie the "Naked Gun" or was it 'Police Squad'? Nielsen plays a police officer standing in front of an exploding fireworks factory, telling the crowd, "Ok, move along now, nothing to see here" , while a fireworks show is going off behind him.

SWAC GIRL Gets Her Due!

Bob Stuart of the News Virginian did a great article on Augusta County's own SWAC GIRL today! It's really neat to see the local media pick up on, and acknowledge her blog, and activity in the local party. This amazing lady balances a lot of duties, which first and foremost center around her husband and children. Then she is 'knee deep', and she might even say 'neck deep' in local party politics, and event planning such as being the catalyst behind our two great Support the Troops Rallies held on the Augusta County Courthouse Steps.

Her blog gets a ton of criticism from the left... and that is all you need to know, about how effective she is at driving home the Conservative message.

FOP "Cop of the Quarter"
The Central Shenandoah Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police awarded two officers the "Cop of the Quarter" Award. Present for the ceremony were Delegate Steve Landes, Delegate Chris Saxman, Delegate Ben Cline, and Candidate Scott Sayre.

Senator Hanger first declined, then said he was coming, then he didn't show up.

The nomination for their award read as follows:
The Nine Trey Bloods are a part of the United Blood Nation. Locally, they have roots in NYC Riker’s Island. They are powerful in New Jersey. For fun and initiation, they slash innocent victims with box-cutters.

On December 14,2006, 22 members of the local gang were arrested the RAGE task force. The 22 were engaged in a variety of activities that included drug and weapons offenses. Just this past week, one of the arrested was found guilty of assaulting three men. He was sentenced to 7 years.

The local police effort was spearheaded by two officers. Candy Jones of Augusta County, and Chris Hartliss of the Staunton PD. Some might remember Officer Hartliss spoke before the FOP last year. For their effort and achievement they share this quarter’s “Cop of the Quarter” Award.
We would also like to recognize Sheriff Fisher, and Chief Williams for their continued efforts in gang control, and law enforcement. Many others were involved in this effort. We would like to take the opportunity to thank them for their efforts. Dean Zullig and Joe Fleming from the Virginia State Police, VL Vess from the VA ABC. We also appreciate the efforts by the DEA, the ATF, US Attorney General .

"Conservative Leadership for Virginia"

The title of this post is Emmett Hanger's slogan. At this point, the slogan is more of a theory than a reality.

Ten years ago Emmett Hanger chaired the task of finding a new Virginia state song- a task which he supposedly thought was very important. Now, ten years later, there is still no Virginia state song.

"Hanger provides leadership," you say? "Hanger will be placed on more committees and chair the finance committee so he can help us out more," you say? "Hanger is a leader," you say?

Hanger has been the 24th district's senator for 8 years. During that time the Valley has become one of the most prolific Meth manufacturing and distribution zones on the East Coast, while our state troopers remained under-manned and under-funded. I81 has become a traveler's nightmare, with major wrecks happening frequently and lives lost, while no transportation fixes have taken place. Illegal immigrant population has continued to rise and gang related violence has continued to increase, while no proactive measures have been taken to prevent or control these crisis.

How can we expect Hanger to take care of these problems when he cannot even provide a state song after a DECADE??? Where is the "LEADERSHIP" that people are talking about?

Leaders get things done, despite any difficulties. What has Hanger gotten done? Well, raise taxes, talk about raising more taxes, try to get illegal immigrants into our state colleges with in-state tuition benefits, try to give some convicted felons back their voting priviledges, make big-money friends in Richmond, and spend our state budget money like crazy.

If all that is negative, then Hanger's facts are negative, because those are the F.A.C.T.s

If you don't like them, well, that's your problem, 'cause you can't make facts go away... Even if you run an expensive advertising campaign to cover 'em up.

The Stonewall Brigade will be heard from today...

It began in 1742 when Colonel James Patton organized the Augusta County Regiment of Militia.

It continues today as the 116th prepares to hit the desert lands of the Middle East.

The 116th is a noble, honorable, and courageous group of men and women who derive their name from one of the most, cunning, brave, and honorable men in the history of America's military. General Thomas Johnathan "STONEWALL" Jackson.

The 116th IS the Stonewall Brigade of so much military and tactical fame. They are not scared by the PC Police of our land, for they still carry the marks of their victories from this conflict on their battle flag. The names of such ring out like a tolling bell--First Manassas, The Penninsular Campaign, The Valley Campaign, Chancellorsville, Second Manassas...on and on and on...

They served duty on the Mexican Border from 1916 to 1917. And when called into combat, they hit the beaches hard in World War I, seeing heavy action in France during World War I, earning their motto "Ever Forward" for their reputation of never having given ground in battle.

Then, years later, the Stonewall Brigade would put their plows down once more and pick up their rifles.

D-Day. 06 JUN 44. The assault landing on the Normandy.

After gaining a foothold and pushing inland, the Stonewall Brigade drove on toward St. Lo. The fall of this heavily defended stronghold led to the breakthrough. Major Thomas D. Howie, a Battalion Commander in the Stonewall Brigade, killed in action before the capture of the town, became a legend as the "Major of St. Lo". As he issued his final attack order, he parted company with his Commanders and staff with, "See you in St. Lo!"

Pinched out of line in August, the Stonewall Brigade was sent to Brittany to reduce the Wehrmacht fortifications at Brest, chief port on the peninsula, and fanatically defended by Nazi paratroopers. This mission accomplished, the Division took off on a 200 mile move across France, Belgium and Holland to attack the vaunted Siegfried Line. They smashed through at Aachen and became the first allied Division to reach the Roer River, holding its position throughout the Battle of the Bulge to the South.

In February of 1945 the 29th crossed the Roer and pushed on to the Rhine. On 02 MAY 45, the Stonewall Brigade made the historic link-up with Russian forces along the Elbe River.

And through all other major wars, uprisings, and conflicts, the Stonewall Brigade continues to make their original commander, General Thomas Jackson proud. The echoes of EVER FORWARD are being heard right now, thousands of miles away, as the Brigade has been called into duty...one more time...to WIN the WAR in Iraq.

A letter to the Editor in the Newsleader today.

Are elected officials the ruling class?
Candidate Scott Sayre signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge. He stated that he would not raise tax rates. I wrote that I was gratified he did so. Shortly thereafter, The News Leader published three opposing views from their online forum section. They went a step further and added their own editorial in opposition the same day.
Opposition to my letter seemed to be for two reasons. One, that the signing of the pledge was just a ploy for votes. The second was that it is narrow-minded. In regard to the first, is it a ploy to give voters what they ask for? Is it a ploy to make a promise and keep it? Is it a ploy to actually say something you mean? The state budget has doubled in the last decade from about $17 billion to $34 billion. Population and inflation have not doubled. If the budget maintained pace with both, the budget should be around $24 or $25 billion per year, according to Del. Chris Saxman, R-Staunton. What happened with that extra $9 or $10 billion? Do you think there might be a little pork in there? Do you think it's a ploy to let voters know a representative of the people wants to spend their money more wisely?
Some people said it was narrow-minded for the candidate to lock himself into a firm position. I think it is narrow-minded to think delegates and senators must raise taxes every time they want to spend money for something new. I don't want my representatives to be so closed-minded that they think every program they started should remain funded forever. I want my representatives to align the state's priorities so that I don't get tax increases when the state has a surplus.
The difference can be boiled down to two views. One has the politicians in Richmond saying, "I need all this money to run the government the way I want to do it. Give us this amount of money to make it work" The second is that the people say, "This is the amount of money we can afford and want to use to run the government. Representatives, align the priorities and make it work." Are they the ruling class or elected representatives?

Can't we all just get along?
I don't know all the bloggers on Bloggers4Sayre. I did meet Andrew Clem today at the send-off for the local National Guard. Also on hand were a number of other bloggers for Scott Sayre. Delegate Saxman was present and spoke to the Guard. Candidate Sayre was present and gave gifts to the soldiers and their families. I didn't see Sen. Hanger, but I may have just missed him.
I approached Mr. Clem after he was pointed out to me. I introduced myself as one of the bloggers. He asked for my blog name. He was very cordial. He apologized for upsetting some people with his comments. I, personally, was not upset. I have not been blogging long enough I guess. My belief is that people can disagree politically, but still be personally agreeable. Some of my best friends are members of the Democratic party.
In the words of that famous LA Hyundai racer, "Can't we all just get along?"

Methinks Waldo has missed the point (or have I?)

So after just telling everyone not to get caught in the thickets of blogospheric arguments, I'm posting and reacting to a comment from Waldo to my blog over here. Hypocrisy, thy name is the mirror.

Yet I do think I have to mention Waldo's comments, not because they were offensive, insulting, or below the belt (in fact, they were none of the above, IMHO), but because they are very illuminating about where the left (or to be more precise, Virginia's left) is today. This was the last paragraph from his comment:

Hanger is one of the farthest right, most extreme members of the General Assembly. That's why I find the idea of a primary challenger for him (ed note: I'm guessing Waldo forgot a word here, something like "baffling," "unreal," etc.). It's like Darth Vader being primaried by Palpatine in a "who's the most evil" contest. The idea that I would ever support the man for office is totally crazy. It demonstrates that either you know absolutely nothing about me or you know absolutely nothing about Sen. Hanger. Let's be kind and assume that the former is true.

Now, some folks might consider this paragraph a bit rude, but I grew up in northern New Jersey, where the rule for politics was simple - if you believe in rules, you lose. Seriously, I have no problem with his depth of feeling or twist of rhetorical phrase, but I do find it interesting that Dub-J can consider Hanger "one of the farthest right, most extreme members of the General Assembly" despite the fact that Hanger supported the Warner tax hike of 2004 and the State Senate tax hike plan of 2006 (which was bigger than anything that was proposed in 2007).

What does it say about Waldo? Well, it tells me that Waldo (along with much of the lefty blogosphere these days) is far more concerned about social issues than economic ones. This is understandable given certain national and local events such as (1) the current President's, um, checkered history in limiting the size of domestic government, (2) the sickening record of the Virginia Senate Republican leadership on the tax issue during this young century, and (3) the fact that both Republican nominees for Governor in this century (Earley and Kilgore) emphasized social issues (though not the same ones) over economic issues in their campaigns. Kilgore had a special phobia about the tax issue.

Even so, anyone who follows this campaign would be a fool not to notice the differences between Hanger and Sayre on taxes and the size of government. I would humbly submit, in fact, that Hanger is running exactly the wrong kind of campaign by insisting on calling Sayre and his supporters "anti-tax." This gives Sayre exactly the kind of straight up division that the Virginia Democrats tried for years to avoid (and succeeded, I might add). Yet Hanger is playing right into Sayre's hands.

Have the Democrats been so successful in blurring the distinction that their bloggers (and for all I know, the rest of then lefties may be as stunned by Waldo's blind spot as I am) can no longer notice the tax issue as an ideological one? Or is Waldo (and other bloggers like him, if any) so focused on social issues that almost nothing else matters? I ask because if Virginia does indeed get swept up in a tax revolt (for which I continue to hope and agitate), we may get some very unexpected friends (thought I doubt Waldo would be one of them).

Republitarian did a Question and Answer post with Senator Hanger Monday, and it looks like the "A" part is over, without the Senator answering my question:

Senator Hanger:We have had a very serious regional problem with methamphetamine trafficking in our area. This problem has not manifested itself overnight, but rather over a period of years.Del. Ben Cline has had to go ‘hat in hand’ down to the GA to secure funding for overtime for our State Troopers to try and interdict this activity. Augusta County alone has been authorized 19 state troopers for years, but only 14 have been funded.How do explain your lack of Leadership in this area, and why you have not made public safety a priority, even though you have voted for tax increases each year since 04′, all the while we have been in a surplus?

It should be pointed out that Senator Hanger had this to say in a News Leader article concerning his fellow Republicans who disagree with the Senators performance:

The three-term senator used Wednesday's announcement to rail against radioadvertisements that he said misrepresented his record on taxes and warned that he wouldn't be bullied by "anti-tax, anti-government extremists." "There is a very small but vocal group in the Republican Party that anti-tax is their only message," Hanger said.

Well, a couple of points here Senator. The first is the ad you referring too, is merely informing the voters, there is more than one tax increase than the 04' Warner Tax increase (largest in VA's history), and that 'small group' you refer too, just happened to actually be 6 of 9 unit chairs in your district. Furthermore, in regards of "anti-tax being their only message", you are sadly mistaken, and your silence on the issue of public safety shows you have neglected this issue over the 12 years you have represented our district.

BTW, what about your misleading radio ad?

The News Virginian sent their best reporter Bob Stuart out last night to cover the unprecedented endorsement of 6 out of 9 Unit Chairs of a challenger over a 3 term incumbent Senator. You would think they could have atleast printed some thing as sparse as the News Leader's coverage of the event.

I knew I should have taken a photo of the reporters, so then we could inform the public on just how good a job they are doing, by atleast showing up! But you have really got to ask yourself, why is the editor is wasting his reporters time by sending him to events they have no intention on wasting ink on?

FISHERSVILLE - A group of Republican leaders from across the 24th Senatorial
District offered their endorsement of challenger Scott Sayre on Wednesday.
At the same time, these leaders criticized incumbent Sen. Emmett Hanger, Sayre’s

Valley conservative values,’’ said Rockingham County Republican Committee
Chairman Mike Meredith. “He has joined the Richmond bureaucracy in raising

Also offering support were Republican chairs from Staunton,

Sayre promised to follow the Republican creed of free enterprise and fiscal responsibility.

Wow! I'm impressed.. What really stinks is that Chris Graham of the New Dominion wasn't there to cover the event. Being his own editor, you can always count on him atleast capturing the flavor of the event, while poor unlucky souls like Bob and David Royer, of the News Leader have got to face the 'scissors' of their editors...

Senator Hanger addresses 'Insignificants'

Well, it's official now, Senator Hanger has been doing some liveblogging tonight over at Republitarian, and he has this to say about those 'uppity' Grass Roots' types:

"There is a big differencebetween a dedicated grass roots volunteer and someone
who takesadvantage of their position to advance their own personal agenda in a
meanspirited manner. That type of unacceptable behavior is normally reservedfor
the candidates themselves."
Maybe this is a fair, and civil interpretation of the Senator's thoughts onGrass Roots, or actually 24th District Republican Party members, and in somecases bloggers...

"You are much better seen than heard... now go back to your insignificant
and thankless little jobs.. You can leave political opinions to us 'elected
officials'.. We Matter, YOU DON'T, especially if you are not supporting me!" (unacceptable behavior) Hard policy questions are also, seemingly off-limits.

On Wednesday, during an interview, Senator Hanger made remarks that were discourteous to all of us who have ever helped an incumbent get elected.

"I've gone to the community leaders because I think they're more significant than the members of local parties who find themselves in offices at any particular point in time - because those are somewhat thankless jobs that we kind of hand over to anybody who says they want them," Hanger said in an interview with The New Dominion.

Later Hanger talked about the Republican activists and said: "they've had a tremendous influence on our party at the national level, and not in a positive way."

We wholeheartedly disagree!!! We are deeply grateful for every volunteer effort which has been put forth on our behalf in this campaign, whether you have put up a sign, made phone calls, helped at our offices, wrote a letter to the editor, etc.

According to a Blackburn release, Stosch also claimed to
have cut taxes 33 times as a senator. Blackburn replied that, “If you put a dime
in my left pocket and take a dollar out of my right pocket, that is a tax
increase. You must have to be a CPA to say that is a tax cut.”

Not only is Hanger a part of the cabal of “Republican” state senators that
votes for higher taxes any chance they get, but now he’s explicit when he states
he’d rather not listen to the people?
This guy’s out of touch.

Word 'on the street', is that Emmett is getting 'in touch with his inner grassroots', by hiring a marketing firm out of Richmond to call into our district, and solicit support. Their script is causing a stir however... stay tuned.

Forwarding A Sayre Press Release
In regards to funds raised during the last reporting period, Emmett Hanger stated laws prevented him from raising funds during the legislative session. "I would think as soon as the session was over he would have returned to his home district to seek contributions from the folks who know him best," a spokesman for State Senate Candidate Scott Sayre said. Sayre is challenging Hanger in the June 12th Republican Primary in the 24th District.
Instead Hanger turned to his Richmond insiders for his contributions. "He had time to receive funds from them, just not from the individuals in his district."
Campaign reports show that 84% of the money Hanger raised came from outside his district, compared to 80% of Sayre's money coming from within the district. In fact, the Hanger campaign only had two individual contributors from the district and over 10 big money special interest groups from outside the district. By comparison, the Sayre campaign received no cash contributions from PACs or other special interest groups.
